The Fifth Amendment Meaning?

What does this really mean?

Explain your answer as if you were giving a lecture to a high school class.

It means you can't be tried for the same offense twice, the government can't take your property without compensation, and you cannot be deprived of life, liberty, or property without due process of law.

"Explain your answer as if you were giving a lecture to a high school class."

    Pretty pushy.

It basically means, the gov't can't kill you, or imprison you or seize your property without a legal framework for doing so. What that legal framework is will be determined by Federal and State legislatures along with the courts charge with law adjudication.

Very little anymore, sadly. The RICO act and the Drug war have deprived us of much of the 5th. The Drunk driving laws do much of the same (Don't blow in the breathalyzer, lose your license). The road to Hell is still paved with good intentions.

When someons says "I plead the fifth." it basically means that they know what happened, or they have the information, but they aren't going to say anything to the courts.
