How do you qualify to work for an ad company?

I know it sounds lame, but every once in a while I see some really funny and memorable ads on the tv. What kind of requirements are needed to work for the kind of companies that brainstorm to produce a great ad campaign?

Lots of people can recognize and appreciate funny and memorable ads on TV. But it takes a very special kind of creative mind to be able to brainstorm and produce them into an ad campaign.

That said, here are the characteristics that ad agencies look for in the people they hire: they want people with a wide range of interests (and a wide range of knowledge). It helps to have a college degree to get in the door, but it doesn't have to be in advertising.

The ad agency world needs writers, designers, art directors, and various other specialty people in these fields, not to mention camera people, directors, editors, etc.

If you want to get into the agency field, my suggestion is go not only "appreciate" good TV commercials, but to study them -- even if you aren't in school. By that, I mean watch the best TV commercials, and make written analyses of just what makes these commercials work well. In order for you to be able to create good TV commercials, you MUST understand why the good ones work. Read as much as you can about the creation process of TV commercials, and if possible, hang out with people who do this for a living. This isn't as difficult as it may seem; you can find a good agency, and ask for an internship -- offer to work for FREE, just to learn. You'll be surprised how many firms will do this for people who really are interested.

That's just a start. If you are seriously interested in doing this for a living, feel free to email me. I once owned a major ad ad agency, and personally produced more than 700 TV commercials.

    Good luck.
