~In '61,the Cavern was an illegal after hours spot where everyone snuck to, as dancing in England was banned by act of Parliament. There was a quartet of hoods from the docks of Liverpool who agreed to play there. They had nothing to lose, and jail would have given them more security than they had at home. Unfortunatley for them, their drummer kept telling more and more of his friends about the place and it started getting out of hand. The police were moving in. The band leaders, John Lennon and Paul McCartney, decided to fire the drummer (Pete Best) and they hired a new guy and took their gig to Germany. After that, there was no dancing, in London at least, for 6 months until Grahm Nash put together one band and Keith Richard put toghether another. Although neither the Hollies nor the Rolling Stones were ever good enough to bring back the glory days of the Cavern during the Beatles heyday, Parliament was forced to repeal the dancing ban and English rock was born. Much to the chagrin of John Baldry, who was the god of the underground dance movement of '60's Britain, but, like the Mafia after prohibition, became a big joke when his gig got legal.

They didn't, women danced, men watched. I think men were afraid not looking cool. So they stood around the dance floor trying to look interesting.

In dancehalls, nightclubs, youth clubs etc. Most of the dances we did came from America such as The Twist, The Jive etc.

They moved their feet in time to the music and waved their arms about a bit. Before there were discos there were dance halls.
