What is wrong with our well jet pump?

What is wrong with our well pump?

It won't pump water into the house. It feels very hot and shut off. The big tank is full, but we're getting no water into the house. What could be wrong? If we need a new pump how much do they cost and can it be installed by us? We do not live in a freeze area.

First i would check the fuse or the circuit breaker to it. If it keeps tripping the motor is shot. If it is a submersible well, you will need someone to pull it and replace it +- $1,000.

If booster pump, make sure the shaft isn't sheared. This could be repaired.

I would check to make sure you have power at the pump, 110vac on each leg. It sounds to me like it is only running on one leg of the 220volts. I had the same problem when living in Montana, and found that one of the wires were corroded and not passing full voltage and amperage. If you have old wiring, you may have fuses instaed of circuit breakers. Make sure Both fuses are good. Yhis applies to circuit breakers as well. I have seen one side of a 220 breaker go bad, hense only feeding one leg of 110 vac instead of 2 legs of 110. If all checks out, then go to the pump itself. But a majority of the time it's in the wiring or fuse/breakers. Hope this helped!

You have to prime the pump. That is, get some water in there first. for it to work. There may be a prime plug you remove and fill with water.(with pump off) Close the plug once full and then turn on pump.
