It's entirely contingent on the situation. Loafers have a lot of milage though because they can be worn in a business setting, and more casually with jeans. Wearing them with jeans is actually wearing trendy now, and just started coming in style around fall 2006.

It depends on your work environment. The most conservative style is the plainest sort of lace-up oxford in dark brown or black. A loafer or slip-on (tasseled, penny style, monk strap) is always a bit "edgier".
Pros and cons? In the work environment, the styles do carry some significance. For the conservative oxford, the pros are as follows: it's considered a sign of someone who is trustworthy, conservative, measured, reliable, solid, etc. On the con side, it can also mean someone who never thinks outside the box, a person who is stuck in the past, resistant to change, someone who is not an innovator, or one who doesn't have new ideas. The reverse is true for any more daring shoe style: on the pro side, people who wear a wilder or more fashionable shoe may be considered hipper, cooler, more "in touch" with the latest, the "buzz", someone who is full of new ideas, more artistic, etc. The con is that this person might be flakier, less trustworthy, unreliable, too liberal, etc.
Take your cues from your supervisors and upper management. Watch what they wear to get an idea of the vibe in the office. If your bosses and supervisors are pretty much wearing every type of style, you can go for it. If they are all wearing the same sort of style with very slight variations, do that.

It depends on what you normally wear for work. If it is a suit, then go with laced-up shoes. If it is khakis or slacks, loafer type shoes are better. If you wear jeans to work, the "Euro sneaker" type shoe can be a good choice.
