Now that you are completely confused ride right down the middle of the road. For Christs sakes people have we forgotten this simple rule already?? Ride with the flow of traffic. Learn and use hand signals if in high traffic areas. Riders need to wear helmets in most States. Riders/Pedestrians always have the right of way. No wonder we're all killing each other on the roadways!!

In most states, including Texas where I live, bicycles are vehicles and are expected to travel in the roadway and in the direction of traffic and have the same rights and obligations as motor vehicles (signaling turns for example.) It is, in fact, illegal to ride a bike on the sidewalk in Dallas and most other cities. Having said that, there are numerous locations on my commuting route where the road is narrow, badly maintained near the curb, and heavily traveled where I get on the sidewalk. When I ride in traffic, I use common sense and pull over to let cars by when I can. On the other hand, if I have to turn left, I get over in traffic, in the middle of the lane so I control cars behind me. I also ride fairly quickly when I can.

Walking is done the left, riding is done on the right.

    Hi Opaulo,

    Hope this helps.

Here are some articles on bike riding

    Bike Laws

Bicycle riders and automobile drivers follow the same rules and have the same rights. Example: Cars must stop at a stop sign, and bicycles must stop at a stop sign.

Always ride with traffic. Bicyclists must travel in the same direction as cars.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Where on the road may a bicyclist drive?

If there is usable bike lane, the bicyclist must use it. If there is no bike lane, or it is unusable due to parked cars or other hazards, the bicyclist may drive either on the right shoulder, or near the right edge or curb of the roadway. A bicyclist may move further left to avoid hazards such as parked cars or debris, but the bicycle driver must avoid undue interference with other traffic

You should generally bicycle as far to the right as is practicable. If there is a safe shoulder, use it instead of the traffic lane. Smart cyclists plot a line straight down the roadway 3-4 feet from the curb or parked cars. This allows them space to avoid road hazards and to be more visible to motorists and pedestrians

Which traffic laws apply to bicyclists?

The same laws that apply to other drivers, with some obvious exceptions and special rules, apply to cyclists. Most importantly, bicyclists must obey, and are also protected by, the rules of the road

Bicyclists must obey all traffic lights and signs, and must signal for turns whether driving on a roadway, a bike lane or bike path. Likewise, motorists must obey the rules of the road with respect to bicyclists, including yielding the right-of-way when the law requires it, just as they would to another vehicle.

Bicyclists who violate the law are subject to traffic tickets. Parents can be held responsible for violations by their minor children

In the U.S., it's on the right with the flow of traffic, and you have to follow all the rules cars do too, like stop signs, right of way, etc. You also should use hand signals to let people know when you're turning. A small mirror will allow you to see traffic behind you.

Walkers walk on the left facing oncoming traffic so they can see the cars.

Yesh, people must not ride their bikes anymore....The LEGAL way to do things is to ride your bike in the bike lane on the right side of the rode with the flow of traffic, unless a sign dictates otherwise.

Well in the UK you're supposed to ride with the traffic (which is left in UK), so i'd imagine it'd be right, as thats the way the traffic flows in the US. You're never supposed to ride towards the traffic, it's considered much more dangerous. In the UK anyway. I would imagine it's the same in the US though!

Any time you have to share a road with cars you are held to the same rules. You go with traffic. Oh, and don't be intimidated by the obese locos in their cars.

You are not required to wear a helmet, but not wearing a helmet is as stupid as not wearing your seatbelt in a car.

On the right, with the flow of traffic. And yes, please use a sidewalk if it's available.

If you're walking, it should be on the left, against the flow of traffic. Again, always on the sidewalk.

go with the flow of traffic and for god's sake if there is a sidewalk use that instead. Dont be one of those idiots who back up traffic on their whimpy little bike

I believe you are supposed to ride so that you are facing oncoming traffic.
