Does anyone know of any short-term (maybe 6-8 weeks ish) volunteer/study opportunities in the USA?
I'm planning to have a prolonged holiday/vacation in the USA (anywhere, but ideally east-coast states), for 6-8 weeks (ish, i'm flexible) next year, but I will be staying alone so would like to be able to do some studying or some volunteering so I can meet people.
Does anyone know of any opportunities like this? I'm not a student (so J1 visa is out :(.) but I know you can volunteer under the visa waiver program for non-profits but I can't find any that take short-term positions.
Or do you know of any colleges that offer short courses that I could take?
My areas of interest are social work/social care but anything helping people would be fine. I have experience and an undergraduate degree in this area and I am 25.
Thanks for any input!
2 AnswersStudying Abroad1 decade agoDo I need a certain visa to do volunteer work in the US?
I want to do some volunteer work in the US, non-paid of course, and I was trying to work out if I need a specific visa for this or if I can go on the 90 day visa waiver program like I would if I was going on vacation there?
I'm from the UK, if that makes a difference, and I am only wanting to go for a month or so.
I can't find any information on this, so any links or a answer would be very helpful! Thanks!
3 AnswersImmigration1 decade agoAnyone know where I can find a cheap dvd player that is multi-region hackable? Has anyone tried to hack...?
I'm looking for a very cheap dvd player that I can make multi-region (using a hack), or buy a very cheap dvd player that is already multi-region (though they seem more expensive). Does anyone have any recommendations?
Or has anyone bought any of the following DVD players and been able to hack them? Or does anyone know if any of these are hackable/multi-region:
from Tesco:
Tesco Value DPA08 DVD Player
Toshiba SD-185E-K-TB DVD Player with DIVX
Technika Full Length DVD Player
From Asda:
Pacific DVD1002MK2 DVD PLAYER DVD
From Argos:
Argos Value DS-306A Silver DVD Player.
Alba DVD Player DS-5711 with Display.
Alba DVD Player DS-5711D with Display.
Alternatively, does anyone know a good site I can find multi-region hacks for any of the above DVD players?
Thanks in advance for any help you can give. I haven't been on this site in years but I remembered it used to be helpful.
3 AnswersOther - Electronics1 decade agoWhere to temp work in the US? All suggestions welcome?
I am a student in the UK. I am looking to work for a summer (either this year or next) in the US. I will probably go through a program such as BUNAC which sorts out visa's and such.
My question is though, where would you suggest is a good area for a young college student, on her own, to work for a summer?
I'm very open to where in the US. I've been to florida before and I adore it (especially the coast) but I know summer is not a good time to visit.
I'd prefer east coast so the flight isn't as long. I'd like somewhere hot but not unbearable, coast would be wonderful but not vital, and I'd need to get around without a car. I don't want a big city or somewhere where I'll feel very unsafe!
Anyone have any suggestions? This is more a opinion thing than a proper question! I'm open to all and any answers and the more specific the better (so 'this area' is better than 'this state'!)
All help is appreciated. Thanks.
2 AnswersOther - United States1 decade agoDo Americans use the word 'flannel'? If no, what word do they use?
I'm writing a story that's going to be read by American's more than anything probably. I usually stick with British words and spelling anyway, unless it's in dialogue, but I don't want readers to go 'huh?'.
So I wanted to know if Americans would use the word flannel in this use? A flannel here is like a cloth that you use to wash yourself. It's made from material similar to that of a towell but is of course smaller.
What would Americans use to describe a cloth you clean yourself with, if not? Just a 'cloth'? I don't want it confused with a cloth you would wash dishes or surfaces with.
Any help would be great, and if it's area specfic i'd just need the most general term. Thanks.
9 AnswersLanguages1 decade agoWhy do you believe dreams mean something?
I actually want trueful answers, I'm not saying they don't or they do (and aren't looking for reasons why or why not), I'm just curious as to why most people seem to believe that they must have some deeper meaning.
A very large majority of questions in this section are on dream analysis and people asking what their dream means. My question is to them, what makes you think your dreams means something? Are you sure they do or are you just curious as to what it could mean?
I know alot of the research on dreams and them 'meaning' something is only one theory, yet it seems to be the most well accepted theory, especially on here, and I was curious to why? Is it something in the media you've seen? Something you've been bought up to believe because of others? Or have you actually seen all the research and decided this is the theory you agree with most?
8 AnswersPsychology1 decade agoWhy don't the US celebrate pancake day? (Yes I realise your probably fed up with pancake q's!)?
Ok so i know people may be fed up with pancake questions but i searched and no one has asked this. Plus i've just had my pancakes and it's got me curious!
So i know the reason behind pancake day (shrove tuesday) and I know why we make pancakes etc. And I know it's celebrated in the UK, Ireland and Aussie-land.
But I hear it's not common in the US? Does anyone historically know if there is a reason for this or if it just didn't 'catch on'?
I'm curious because it's basically a Christian thing and I figure in the US there is a pretty big majority of Christians. I know other coutries celebrate something similar but not the US? (I know about Mardi Gras too)
I'd also like to hear to if you are from the US and do celebrate (also if you do, whether you eat 'american style' pancakes or some more similar to the ones we in the UK eat). That'd be interesting to.
3 AnswersOther - Holidays1 decade agoQuestion about a tattoo seen on Miami Ink- click for more details?
Anyone watch Miami Ink?
I saw a tattoo on there a while ago and I really want to know the artist of it and to try to find a picture of it online.
It was a portrait for someone but instead of a normal portrait, the image was done in like bubbles. It was big and across the persons back and I think it was of the persons two children, and the image was inside the bubbles. It was amazing and i loved the idea of the image being inside the bubbles- i was thinking of getting something similar but wanted the picture as a reference.
I'm thinking it was Kat who did it because it was a portriat but not sure.
So if anyone saw this episode and knows the artist who did it and could tell me that'd be great. A link to an image of it would be even better.
This is a long shot but thought it was worth a try!
4 AnswersTattoos1 decade agoWhat are some female movie characters that I could go to a fancy dress party as?
I'm going to a fancy dress party and the theme is movie stars. I want something that's not to hard to make work, but something where people will know who I am (so people who dress ordinary won't really work).
I would most like a sexy powerful sort of character (I had been thinking along the lines of Batwomen or even Catwomen maybe, but two friends have stolen those ideas!).
I'm really stuck and none of my family and friends have been any help! So any idea's anyone here has will be wonderful.
I hope this sort of question is allowed. Thanks!
13 AnswersMovies1 decade agoWhat is the correct way to do sit-ups/crunches?
Whenever i do sit-ups i get awful back and neck pain. It aches and properly hurts sometimes.
I realise i must be doing it wrong but i'm not sure why. I've even got one of those sit-up apparatus things that's supposed to make sure you do it properly but that doesn't work. I'm not very overweight so i don't think thats the problem.
So can anyone explain the correct way to do them? Or if not does anyone know any good sites that has explinations (pictures would also be great)?
