Why do you believe dreams mean something?
I actually want trueful answers, I'm not saying they don't or they do (and aren't looking for reasons why or why not), I'm just curious as to why most people seem to believe that they must have some deeper meaning.
A very large majority of questions in this section are on dream analysis and people asking what their dream means. My question is to them, what makes you think your dreams means something? Are you sure they do or are you just curious as to what it could mean?
I know alot of the research on dreams and them 'meaning' something is only one theory, yet it seems to be the most well accepted theory, especially on here, and I was curious to why? Is it something in the media you've seen? Something you've been bought up to believe because of others? Or have you actually seen all the research and decided this is the theory you agree with most?
Thanks for the answers so far, but just to clarify, I know Freud's interpretation of dreams, but his isn't the only theory on them, I just am interested in why his is the one alot of people seem to believe in (and seem to think it's the only theory) and I wondered why people believe that over other theories.
I'm not sure I'm wording my question right, or if I can even get answers I want ( I guess SaD's answer is close, in sort of explaining why people believe dreams mean something). But keep answering please! Especially if you do believe dreams have a meaning, I'd like to know why!

Although scientists continue to debate this issue, most people who work with their dreams, either by themselves or with others, find that their dreams are very meaningful for them. Dreams are useful in learning more about the dreamer's feelings, thoughts, behavior, motives, and values. Many find that dreams can help them solve problems. Further, artists, writers, and scientists often get creative ideas from dreams.

According to Freud's Interpretation of Dreams, our dreams are a way for our unconscious to transmit our deepest desires to our conscious. Since most of these desires tend to be threatening in some way to our waking ego, it also explains why we tend to forget our dreams so often immediately upon waking. He also said that sometimes our dreams are just fragments of what we encounter during the day (items, people, words that we overhear, sights) and yes, desires we secretly have. However, Freud doesnt believe in dreams as psychic or whatnot- like he said, they're just things our unconscious reaaaaaaaaaaallly want.

I don't believe that there is a universal dream analysis method. I don't think one person dreaming about a river has the same meaning as another person dreaming about a river. But I do think your dreams can give you access to thoughts and emotions you didn't realise you had. I see dreams as a way of figuring out what your mind is preoccupied with. I don't think anyone else can help you figure out what the dream means, but it is nice to get a different perspective.

I don't always believe they do sometimes it's just random firing of the brain. However I do think when you have something stressful going on in your life your brain is trying to work it out. After my parents died I dreamt about them all the time and I took a lot of meaning and comfort from those dreams, they did mean something.

Mine sometimes come true. My dream was 2 be with a guy and have him with me for the rest of my life and he is willing 2 do that.

Dreams don't mean anything. They are only dreams.
If they did mean anything, I would have Jenny McCarthy, the Britney Spears of about 4 years ago, and pre-diseased Pam Anderson in my bedroom right now.
