Why does most US airline have 30 day max travel restriction for their low fare?

Wanted to travel from Honolulu to Singapore for more than 30 days. Most US airlines' (such as United and Northwest) low fare have a max day restriction. However, international airlines (such as JAL) does not impose this restriction. What benefit does US airlines has for this type of restriction?

It's similar to the Saturday night stay-over rule. US airlines make these restrictions because the low fares are directed at the leisure traveler, the tourists. These fares are low because the people buying them don't HAVE to take a holiday. The Saturday rule eliminates business travelers, and the 30 day max stay eliminates people who live in foreign countries for part of the year. Most tourists visitin Singapore don't stay over 30 days.

I'm surprised JAL does it. Are you sure those are "low fares" JAL is offering. I think the restriction for low fares is because of two things.

    1) It is the low season you are given choices for. It is not low season if you can extend the travel into peak season.

    2) It is hard to predict oil costs in advance and if you want something far in advance they will build in higher oil prices into the ticket in case the oil price goes up.
