*TechTeach03- I guess you are lucky to work in a school district with guidance counsleors.
The role of the Teacher in my state of California is changing.
Where I live and work, counselors have basically been cut out of the budget. With one guidance counselor for every 966 students, we rank last among the states.
That means the teachers here have had to absorb that impact by becoming 'neutral problem solvers' in some student's lives. Some teachers have had to educate themselves on the community assistance programs out there available for children/families in crisis, or special programs for special needs learning and off-site counselors who will perform an IEP.
If the school counselors are not there, why should any child be denied the motivation, assistance, outreach or one to one services. Teachers and counselors have similar background training in child development, multi cultural awareness, diversity and basic psychology so It's not like they do not understand how to brainstorm neutral solutions to some students issues.

Teachers have the same rights in their personal lives as anyone else. However, in the classroom some responsibility is needed as for instance, misinforming the children is wrong and bringing up and conversing on subjects that are out of their range (as is sex with while conversing younger children) is also unfair.

They can discuss anything but sexual matters.A teacher should not discuss the looks of the student, facial, clothing any thing personal.Unless it is dress, not allowed in school. If a student is having problems at home the student can discuss it with the teacher but, the teacher should send the student to the school administrater and let them handle it.

Your question is highly dependent on the venue in which said teacher is employed. Do you mean public school, private school, parochial, montasory, catholic?? It is never acceptable to discuss personal sexual experiences or drug related experiences. Never discuss grades of individual students with others. Other than that, it depends on the situation.

the less involved you get in a student's personal life the better...best intentions are often misconstrued and I have seen many a teacher just trying to "help" get themselves in trouble...schools have trained professional counselors to deal with serious emotional and personal problems...teachers have a duty to report anything they know or suspect is wrong, we are encouraged to not try and solve the problem or give advice...there are too many openings for parents to accuse a teacher of wrongdoing or interfering in their parental matters...

teachers are like role model.they should pick on any meaningful topic that could impact possitively on the on thier pupils, several times you hear the children say 'my teacher said' they always take what the teacher says very serious.
