Not if they are really and truly made out of stainless steel. Stainless is real good about living up to it's name so you should be perfectly safe, unless there are chemicals involved and even then, few really mess with it. Enjoy your new jewelry.

While the heat can cause metal to discolor, MPChue is correct, it's the soot from a dirty burning fire that causes the black deposit, and vaporized tar that seals it in place. The term for it is creosote, just like what builds up in a fireplace or wood stove chimney. Left alone, it will build up thicker and act as an insulator to make it more difficult to heat the contents of the cup. But when it does get thick usually the heavier pieces will start to chip and flake off. This is going to happen with any container you use over a wood fire. You can clean the deposits with scouring pads (Scotch-Brite), steel wool (Brillo), or scouring powder (Ajax). As you discovered, sandpaper will also work but leave scratches. You can remove the scratches with finer sandpaper followed by ultra-fine "wet" sanding.
