i'm in class 10 cbse there was this ques. where the ratio of roots of quadratic equation was given and....

a variable was given in the equation, had to find the value of the variable...

it was something like x^2+(m+2)x+m+2=0 ; there roots are in ratio 2:3 find the value of m

(i cannot remember the exact question)

can someone quote it and tell me how to go about it

    Let the roots be 2a and 3a (then they are in the ratio of 2:3. So the equation is (x - 2a)(x - 3a) = 0, which multiplied out is:

    x^2 - 5ax + 6a^2 = 0

    So you have:

    -5a = m+2 and

    6a^2 = m+2

    so -5a = 6a^2 so a=-5/6.

    So the roots are: -5/3 and -5/2.
