I could be wrong, but I think they are made of different material. Rain coats are generally plastic or vinyl aren't they? I believe trench coats are more stylish.

If you are in the United States, it's a trench coat. If you are in England, it's a Mackintosh. (Or a Mack). That's the only difference I can see. It's the same as in America, the rear compartment of your car is a trunk. In England it's the boot. Just another word for the same thing.

Firstly it does depend on the brand that you are planning on buying.
Traditional rain coats like Burberry ones are made from Garbadine Its a cotton fibre which is coated then made into the garbadine fabic. This makes it SHOWERPROOF, wind resistant and (depending on if it has wool lining) warm and breathable.
A raincoat is made from a plastic fabric. Usually thin.. i think its polythurane. A man made fibre.
plastic raincoat are usually pretty 'boxy' Whilst a traditional "trench coat" can be the classic military one is very very trendy" And comes in al different colours.
The Burberry trench coat is expensive but trust me well worth it. My mum had one from when she was my age and it still has lasted for me to wear.

Trench coats are generally a material less shiny than a rain coat. Rain coats are made specifically for propelling rain/water, so.. the material is alot more shiny. Trench coats are normally long, length past hips/butt and sometimes further down to your knees and generally have straps or one, and pockets. Rain coats don't normally have either, unless it's like an early 90's like wind/rain jacket, which I don't think exist anymore.. =P

Trenchcoat is a raincoat made of waterproof heavy-duty cotton drill or poplin, or in some cases leather: it generally has a removable insulated lining; and it is usually knee-length or longer.
The trenchcoat is a descendant of the heavy serge coats worn by British and French soldiers in World War I.
