are the Yankees really not going to extend his contract?

For everyone who is saying the Red Sox have no chance, go read on the latest intervie with him. If the Yankees do not extend him by the beginning of the season he will test free agent waters at the end of the year and in his own word he would even talk to the Red Sox. If the Yankees do not extend him soon there is a very good chance he could be talking to the Red Sox. They would go after him, it would be a great move to sure up the bullpen. YES they could pick him up, anyone could though.

Definitely not, Mariano Rivera will never be seen wearing the Red Sox uniform. Even if he didn't stay with NY he would make the same decision as Andy Pettitte and not join the rival team.Nothing was ever said about them not extending his contract but they will probably write up a new one for more money, it just won't happen this spring. Cashman said in an interview the other day it wouldn't be right for them to work out agreements with one person and leave others in the dark like Torre and Posada (also in walk years). They just want to wait until the end of the season; that's the thing about contracts, they end. Rivera is getting old and did have some elbow problems at the end of last season, I'm sure they just want to make sure he is healthy. Mo is grossy underpaid compared to everyone else on the Yankees (like 10th highest paid player) but is probably the most important. He already said that he wants to be able to pitch as a Yankee in the new Yankee Stadium which will be ready for the 2009 season. If he stays healthy he will retire a Yankee.

Anything is possible. I don't understand how people seem to know what's going on in Rivera's and Cashman's heads, or for that matter anyone elses. That being said...

The Yankees would be utterly foolish not to extend Rivera's contract before this becomes an even bigger distraction than it already is. If they don't extend it and Rivera feels slighted or not respected, who knows what he may do?

Well, in any other moment I will strongly doubt about it. But now that they let Bernie goes.. it is obvious that for the Yankees Adm. this is just business, so if at the end of the year, they think they can have anyone younger maybe they will let Mariano go. I am a Yankee fan and I feel like I have lost a part of me with Williams out. I hope Mariano and Posada resign this year.

Because the Yankees said that they wanted to wait until after the season to talk about his contract...Mariano Rivera will be leaving NY after the '07 season. Him going to Boston would be a major surprise, but stranger things have happened.

    Are you kidding?

Do you really think that the Yankees won't take care of probably the best closer in the history of the game? Brian Cashman has a history of waiting until the season is over to negotiate new contracts. Mussina got one after the season was over. He will make sure that mariano will get one maybe sooner than he has done in the past.

The entire city of New York would call for Brian Cashman's head if he does not resign Rivera at the end of the season.

The reason why Cashman hasn't done so is because Posada and A-Rod have a similar situation and he does not want to deal with one guy and not attend to all three to be fair.

So he has decided to wait until the end of the season which is probably a good move for now. That way he can address everyone in all fairness.

The RED SOX don't have a snowball chance in hell in getting RIVERA. The Yankees will extend his contract.

The Red Sox have as much chance at getting Rivera as Anna Nicole Smith coming back to life.

Much to do about nothing!! Cashman will get the word from George to get this deal done or else. Remember, Cashman has not made too many really great deals lately (Johnson, Brown to mention just two) so he needs to be careful via Rivera.

Rivera will remain a Yankee and retire as a Yankee.
