When shopping for carpet, what should we look for?

We're trying to decide on new carpet in the kids' bedrooms. Besides color, what do we need to look for? Any brand names to look for, or stay away from?

Thanks!

We just replace carpet in our house upstairs and downstairs. Because kids will be kids(and we were doing other projects) I went to Lowes and bought a neutral called iced mocha. Darker than oatmeal. I bought a meduim grade and inexpensive padding. It holds up well (its been 6 months), hides everything, and is fine on the feet. We don't wear shoes in the house nor do the kids take food in the bedrooms. If you keep the messes in the kitchen you don't have to spend a lot.

Many carpets and carpet glues "off gas" chemicals, which if you are putting in children's' rooms could be bad. I don't have a brand or a place to tell you to look, but this is something to be aware of! Key words might be "green" or "sustainable" carpeting.

Take your shoes and socks off and walk on it. In my opinion, if it looks good and feels good get it. Don't cheap out on the pad though as this makes the carpet spongy. I would also look for something easy to either keep clean or that hides stains as it's in a kids' bedroom. Please just don't tell me you're covering hardwood...

Stay away from anything light colored. You want something with a durable pile that will be easy to maintain. Stay away from shag carpeting or anything with loops.

Your best off with a short pile with a multicolored or speckled print. It will be easier to wash and vaccum and the different colors will mask whatever you miss.

    :) Good luck.

Get a good quality jute backing, not some foam rubber type, it will stick to the floor after years. Also don't get any shag, unless you want to rake it out all the time.

If it's for a kids room, make sure it's durable and has stain resistants. I've seen commercials for Empire.

oatmeal colored short shag is popular..... the oatmeal color hides dirt and stains well and the short shag nap is very comfortble... has a classy , clean look
