Why do people vote for bad or incorrect answers?

Example, there is a question that is currently in voting. The question is "Need good easy to make dish, plz!?" and the asker specifies "no beans".

There are a number of good answers, but there is an answer that is particularly bad because both the recipes the answerer posted have beans (which asker specified did not want), plus the answerer says that quick & easy doesn't exist unless it's order out - which is untrue, and says all meals are meant to be completed in an hour or so - also untrue. Did this answerer even really read the question?

That specific answer was given 4 thumbs down, 0 thumbs up, yet at this point is in the lead with votes ... curious why people would vote for an answer that clearly isn't what the asker is looking for?

Update:

I also enjoy funny and witty answers when done properly & in the right time/place/context (& when they really are funny and/or witty) ... however, in food, pets & health people tend to be looking for real answers.

I think some of the other answers here are probably right, some people are lazy & don't read the whole question, and/or they are lazy and just want the answer points so as an answerer don't put much into it, and as a voter just pick the first answer without reading any others.

As for the bad/dumb answers, there are way too many people who think they are funny when they are not, instead their answers are just come out sounding stupid or rude. Wonder if they'd pay attn if the asker noted "serious answers only" at the top after their question.

Luckily, there are many good people on the site. Remember, need to reward the good ones with thumbs ups and votes, and the others with thumbs downs and no votes to keep this site a valuable resource ... and many will not agree w/ this, but report abuse of those who are not following the guidelines.

Well, sometimes the answer is so funny that some find it good enough to be the answer, even if one did not ask for those details...So perhaps the asker should chose the answer that they like the best?

We all know that this site has it's share of clueless people. (Yes, I may be one myself sometimes) So some of the votes are from people who Just Don't Get It. However, I am sure that there are an equal number of bored, easily amused people, and messing with someone's head is funny to them.

I think what's happened is that peple have voted for an answer that has appealed to them but not necessarily what the poster was asking.

Yes you can vote for your own answer.

people are sometimes lazy and do not read all the answer or this person gets his/her family and friends to vote for them, could be that. And don't forget you can vote for yourself as far as i know.
