◙ There are several ways to reset a Windows Administrator password. Below are three examples.

◙ First you have to decide whether you have Windows XP Home Edition or Windows XP Professional Edition. If you don't know you can easily find that information this way.

    1. Open the Start Menu

    2. Right-click the My Computer icon and click on Properties.

    3. The version will be listed there in that page's System Area.

◙ How to reset the Administration password for Windows XP Home Edition.

    1. Restart (click Start Menu > Turn Off Computer > Restart) your computer.

    2. Press F8 repetedly until the Boot Mode menu appears.

    3. Start Windows XP in the troubleshooting mode by selecting "Safe Mode".

    3. When the Widows Logon screen appears, a new user account appears at the top called "Administrator".

    4. Logon with that account which rarely needs a password.

    5. Once you are in go to the Control Panel and reset your password.

◙ How to reset the Administration password for Windows XP Professional Edition.

    1. When the Windows XP Logon screen appears, press CTRL+ALT+DELETE twice very quickly.

    2. Type "Administrator", and leave the password box blank and you are usually allowed to enter.

◙ Didn't that work for you? Well there is another way you can try. You can go to the web site below and download a program that will grab your encrypted password file. Get the information from that program and email the info to the web site and in a day or two you'll get your password back.

◙ TIP: You can get you password back in a few minutes if you give them $20.

◙ More information at the Microsoft Support Site.

    http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q...

◙ The source of this information was "PCs, The Missing Manual". If you have Windows XP you really need to buy this wonderful book. It is worth every penny they are charging for it. Ipoders will find some helpful information here too.

◙ Your computer comes with built-in help files. To get password information click on the START BUTTON > HELP & SUPPORT > SEARCH FOR "PASSWORDS". These help pages used to be a complete waste of time because they were so vague. But now they are very helpful. Back in the old days hard drive space was so small they really couldn't hold the huge cross-referenced help files we have today.

    I Forgot My Windows Password

Hi, you haven't mentioned the version of Windows. Assuming you have XP, the steps are simple. Just download "EBCD - Emergency Boot CD", it's a linux based bootable CD that will let you modify SAM file (where your password is stored).

Note: You cannot reveal the original password, EBCD will only allow you to over-write or remove the old password and if you had any encrypted documents you will not be able to access them unless you recall the original password (see the benefits of encryption :) ).

    EBCD download and details

    http://ebcd.pcministry.com/

Once you download, the process is simple. Burn the CD ISO image on CD using your friends' computer or LAPTOP and boot your PC with this CD (you may have to change BIOS settings to boot from CD).

Once you are booted, read the instructions (they are in simple English) and in case if you are lost just keep pressing "ENTER" key (don't worry -- nothing will go wrong, but it's better to see what you are doing to read before pressing enter) and your password will be changed or set to "BLANK"

That will be all, hope that helps!

PS: Also note that you can only break the local PC password, i.e. using this don't think you have break-in the domain / server. ;)

PPS: And in case you need further help, do let us know.

Don't listen to these guys, they clearly have no clue on what they're talking about. I am a developer at Microsoft so I know a thing or two about computers. The only way to reset your windows password 100% safe is to use a software called Reset Password Pro.

The software allows you to create a boot-disk, that can be made on a CD/DVD or USB stick. The boot-disk can then be inserted into any locked machine, and it's a simple case of pressing reset. Here is their official site: http://www.resetwindowspass.com/

you can easily change or wipe out your Administrator password for free during a Windows XP Repair. Here’s how with a step-by-step instructions:

    1. Place your Windows XP CD in your cd-rom and start your computer (it’s assumed here that your XP CD is bootable – as it should be - and that you have your bios set to boot from CD)

    2. Keep your eye on the screen messages for booting to your cd Typically, it will be “Press any key to boot from cd”

    3. Once you get in, the first screen will indicate that Setup is inspecting your system and loading files.

    4. When you get to the Welcome to Setup screen, press ENTER to Setup Windows now

    5. The Licensing Agreement comes next - Press F8 to accept it.

    6. The next screen is the Setup screen which gives you the option to do a Repair.

It should read something like “If one of the following Windows XP installations is damaged, Setup can try to repair it”

Use the up and down arrow keys to select your XP installation (if you only have one, it should already be selected) and press R to begin the Repair process.

    7. Let the Repair run. Setup will now check your disks and then start copying files which can take several minutes.

    8. Shortly after the Copying Files stage, you will be required to reboot. (this will happen automatically – you will see a progress bar stating “Your computer will reboot in 15 seconds”

    9. During the reboot, do not make the mistake of “pressing any key” to boot from the CD again! Setup will resume automatically with the standard billboard screens and you will notice Installing Windows is highlighted.

    10. Keep your eye on the lower left hand side of the screen and when you see the Installing Devices progress bar, press SHIFT + F10. This is the security hole! A command console will now open up giving you the potential for wide access to your system.

    11. At the prompt, type NUSRMGR.CPL and press Enter. Voila! You have just gained graphical access to your User Accounts in the Control Panel.

    12. Now simply pick the account you need to change and remove or change your password as you prefer. If you want to log on without having to enter your new password, you can type control userpasswords2 at the prompt and choose to log on without being asked for password. After you’ve made your changes close the windows, exit the command box and continue on with the Repair (have your Product key handy).

    13. Once the Repair is done, you will be able to log on with your new password (or without a password if you chose not to use one or if you chose not to be asked for a password). Your programs and personalized settings should remain intact.
