Will Windows XP run on this old computer?
Had Windows 98 SE for 7 years! Intel Celeron 533 Mhz, 256 MB, HD space not important. Will it be minimum, good, or fast enough?

XP will run on a computer that old, but I recommend to add more RAM, at least 512MB is recommended for XP, I'm guessing it's using SDRAM. Also disable all the fancy visual effects and system sounds to speed things up.

It will but minimum, I reccomend windows 2000, its pretty much xp with a lot less system requirments
I reccomend no less than 512mb of ram and and atleast twice as fast processor to run XP
Before you pay the $100+ to get a upgrade for xp, I think you should look at maybe buying a newer PC that already has Vista or XP on it. If you look hard enough you can find some pretty cheap PCs for $300-$500 thats light years faster.

Your main concern is the ram. Just add another 256MB stick on there and it should run pretty good. My laptop has a P3 450Mhz, 256 MB, and it runs Windows Xp Pro. It will work and run decent but I recommend upgrading your ram to 512MB.

Hello,
The recommeded specs you need for XP are
300 MHz CPU *
128 MB of RAM *
1.5 GB of available hard disk space < IS important
Super VGA (800 x 600) or higher-resolution video adapter with at least 8 MB of video RAM and monitor
CD-ROM or DVD drive
Network adapter
Sound card and speakers
Although the RAM recommended is only 238 Mb...you WILL NOT be happy with that, as XP is a RAM hog and will, therefore, run slowly...
You'll need to upgrade your ram to 512 to be happy,
Go to crucial.com for "good" memory.
AND have enough free/unused hard drive space to have a paging file (virtual memory allocation) of at least
one GB. So that means you'll need
800 MB for system files plus 1024 MB for virtual memory, and then sufficient hard drive space for all your other programs. (About 4 GB will go to Programs).
You may experience some game lag or
game graphics not too sharp
but all else should run fine, as long as you're not looking for your computer to be a racer.
Now, all that said, considering the cost of XP
and possibly having to upgrade your graphics card
AND adding sufficient RAM
do the math to see if you would do better with an
emachine AMD Semptron 3400+ (under $500)

It will run, just barely. I had Windows XP installed on my Pentium III 800Mhz, 512 MB and it was quite slow. You'll need to keep background programs (like quick starters, anti-virus/spyware, firewalls, email clients, etc) to a bare minimum otherwise it will take 1-2 hours to start up and will run slower.

XP will run on a computer that slow, but I recommend to add more RAM, at least 512MB is recommended for XP. Should be a $50 upgrade tops.

Yeah, those specs are just scraping by for XP. If you are in desperate need to upgrade, you could go for Windows 2000, even though its pretty old, (along with '98)....However, I dont even know where you can buy 2000 anymore....
good luck!

Yes it does. I had 533 mhz with xp it runs but add more ram.

No of course not! Even if it can it would be super slow!!!!
Try buying a new computer!
