Should England bother playing the Irish Anthem next year?
They don't seem to really know the words (just shout the chorus) and seem to have an issue playing the English one this year.
No I'm not English, just fed up with plastic Paddys on here all week.
Nice answer Sean, I like the way you express yourself. You're a literary genius

Drop ALL the bloody national anthems, wherever they are from. No-one knows the words, and they just waste time and keep everyone hanging around twiddling their thumbs and waiting for the match to start.
Anyway, they're all miserable, outdated dirges about "how wonderful we are, and how we are so great and everyone else who's not us is shite". Apart from the Italian one, which is actually quite jolly.

The reason that the irish have a problem playing the english national anthem this Sunday is because they have opened a new stadium to international sports like rugby. It used to be for irish sports only, GAA sports.
Many years ago (I think around 1920) during an all-ireland final, British forces barged into the stadium, and 14 people were killed.
This is a historical part of irish history and to turn around now and play the english anthem would be a big deal, but their gonna do it.
I am Irish, i live in Cork. and i'll agree that many dont know the words but thats because its in irish, and not many people speak fluent irish anymore.

God shop the Queen, is the national anthem of the united kingdom , not purely large Britain ie. it quite is the national anthem of N.eire besides. it is likewise the Royal anthem utilized in lots of Commonwealth international places consisting of Australia and Canada. there's no first rate anthem of england. for my section i admire the music Jerusalem, yet could like, if there is going to be an anthem for England, for it to be Land of wish and Glory, which i think is better and sounds extra like an anthem.

Not to bothered about the anthems but boy do i get pisted off when its plastic paddys day!!!
Why the **** do people have to pretend to be from another country when they are so clearly not.
fair play if you are irish but for any pretenders, take a look at yourself you are an embarrasement and the irish would proberly feel the same about you.
And as for the british forces storming the game at croate park, was this not a revenge attack for the british soldiers that got snuffed out the day before or something along those lines?
IWhatever happens i hope its all turns out to be a good game with england winning..................but i dont think it will!!

Fair enough if Ireland can opt out of playing "God save the queen."
It's always been a tradition to play both anthems before a game, why stop now?We all know the English would like only
their anthem to be played but..tough.
No, I'm not Irish either.

No I think it would much better if they sang the blue flag song goes something like this :
Hello Hello, How Do You Do
We Are The Boys In Royal Blue
Where E'er We Go, We Fear No Foe
We'll Keep The Blue Flag Flying High
Oh Flying High Up In The Sky
We'll Keep The Blue Flag Flying High
Where E'er We Go, We Fear No Foe
We'll Keep The Blue Flag Flying High

"Many years ago (I think around 1920) during an all-ireland final, British forces barged into the stadium, and 14 people were killed."
true but i wonder if any of the forces that burst in where actual Irish? As my history is a bit rusty, was it an "Irish" regiment in the British forces that did it, though i could be wrong.

Thar toinn do ráinig chugainn,
Fé mhóid bheith saor.

Anocht a théam sa bhearna bhaoil,
Le gean ar Ghaeil chun báis nó saoil

You think there are too many plastic paddys now, just wait until the 17th March when all of a sudden everyone has an Irish grandmother. God it's tedious.

They don't seem to really know the words..?
as opposed to the standard renditions of "God Save the Queen"
(da da da da da da dah
Send her victorious
Happy and Glorious
mumble mumble mumble us
God Save the Queen
and repeat)
or "Swing Low"
which is just the same two lines over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again.
