Television license?

There was a question posted on the general site (it was viewable in the States) that asked if anyone had been able to get away with not paying for a television license. I have never heard of that. Could someone please explain the purpose, and what the funds raised are used for?

Americans would revolt again if there was a tax on television.

Thanks!

tv license is £131 a year. you have to have one if you have a television, or a mobile phone you can receive tv on, or the internet. The funds are just for the BBC which don't have adverts to raise the money but you can't just not have BBC. If you don't have a tv license a man comes to your house with a detector van and if he sees your watching tv without a licence you get busted. its like a £1000 fine and a police interview at the police station. I went 9 months without a tv license, and had sky for 3 of those months. I shat mself tho and am now paying £26 a month for 6 months to cover a years tv license.

To own a tv, in the uk you require a licence, which is about 130 pounds annually. This money then goes towards the 4 main tv stations, however bbc, get the majority as it has no sponsors for their programmes either advertisements.

If you wish to gain satellite tv, such as sky you also have to pay 100 pound for a digibox, and then a subscrition charge of up to 15 a month based on the package you choose. (however, unlike the tv licence this is an optional luxury).

If you dont pay your licence for the tv, you can get a heavy fine, or jail sentence. They know that you dont hold one simply by a computer in a van that can tell whether your tv is showing heat.

In the UK the license fee is compulsary for all households recieving television broadcasts on any medium (even on your phone). The money goes towards funding the BBC which does not show commercial advertising. In theory this means the BBC can develop high quality programs free of the pressures of constant high audience figures demanded by advertisers. You can get away without paying, but not for very long.

In the UK there is a televisioin license because there are no commercials to pay for television there. Unlike the US where we are unindated with all sorts of horrific commercials the BBC has 4 channels that are on television programming and it is on for a small television fee. I think it is fair. We shouldn't judge other countries practices until we know about why they do them.

The BBC uses the money to pay for the programmes, there are no adverts on BBC channels except for other BBC channels and programmes. I have to admit, I much prefer the way you lot do it, it's about £130 for a year over here, that's about $255!

theres 4 main channels on " free " tv in the UK

    BBC1 / BBC2 / ITV / Channel 4

its the bbc's way of making money by not showing ads.

basically the licence is only for bbc but u cant buy a ITV/CH4 only tv so u have to pay it, get it?
