Because a "Pre-med" or "Pre-law" degree is a Bachelor's degree that you can obtain as an undergraduate. They are typically precursors to a higher degree, which would be a Medical degree or a Law degree which you obtain AFTER already having your Bachelor's.

it's not a stupid question. subjects with the word "pre" usually means that you have to take certain courses and pass them in order to be accepted into that program as a medical student, law student, etc. it may also involve other requirements like getting an internship, doing some volunteer work, having and maintaining a certain gpa, becoming a member of a certain club or group that may be a sponsor or affiliate, etc. as an incoming freshman, the university wants to make sure you are prepared to handle the challenge of such a program like law or medical school so the "pre" part is like a testing period to find out who will make it and who wont. anybody can say they want to major in medicine, law, engineering, etc. but not everybody will end up with that as their degree which is why it's called premed, prelaw, etc. so good luck!

That's okay, this answer isn't stupid. When someone says thier Pre-med or Pre-dental, basically thier telling you that, thier going to school to get a bachelor degree in some science, but that their not just stopping there. Once they get thier bachelors degree they'll be able to apply to dental, medical, etc school. They aren't in it YET, but their basically saying that THE WANT TO BE, and plan on being in medical, dental, or any other school where you have to get a graduate degree in, such as Pharmacy, and Veterinarian school, which USUALLY don't accept you unless you have a Bachelors degree.

You can't enter medical school, or law school, etc. until you have already earned a Bachelor's degree. So for your bachelor's, you can study pre-medical but you can't study medicine until after you already have graduated with a degree. I imagine pre-med would be all the prerequisites for medical school: chemistry, biology, etc.

pre-med is an advising program for undergraduate students (fresh, sophomore, junior, senior) to help them prepare to take the MCATS and coursework to help them be successful applicants for a medical program. It's NOt a major, even though people run around saying that they are "premed".

    Hope that helps
