First, no one can stop you from bringing in a Union so obviously no one tried. The union knows how to get in the door. Secondly, in spite of your beliefs, most companies hire people to be there and do the job. Most companies do not have the funds to pay people just to be on the payroll. Obviously there either has been a problem with attendance in the past or you were a relatively new employee. Talk to the unemployment office to see what they can do for you.

When you had pneumonia, did you bring in a doctor's slip? Sounds corny, but most companies require a doctor's signature stating you are too sick to work. Did you call in daily to give an update on your sickness? Again, even small companies respect that.
I'm not saying you are totally to blame, but I am saying that your company must of had a reason to fire you that goes over and beyond pneumonia. Majority of companies don't fire over a sickness, they will fire over a job not being done or a job not being done well.
You could try to press legal action, but I can guarantee you that your company would tie you up in court with legal costs that can last year's. Do you have the cash in the bank to back that up? If not, then give up and get another job.
