I just started Uglies by Scott Westerfeld. I like it - can really see the city, the parties, the Pretties and the Rusties (I think it is.) I have the rest of the trilogy waiting - Pretties and Specials.

Scary take on the future, for sure, but that's one of the reasons I chose it. I like Lois Lowry's trilogy - The Giver, Gathering Blue and messenger. Saw a lot of feedback on Uglies (positive). It hasn't been what I thought it would be just from looking at the title.

Just read How to Be Popular by Meg Cabot. It's a good book, but not her best work. I like her Princess Diaries Series the best because they're funny and in journal form.

I'm currently in the middle of "Recipe of Memory" by Victor M. Valle and Mary Lau Valle. Not only is it a fascinating history of a Mexican family from Mid-19th century Guadalajara to their adventures in 20th century Los Angelos, but it is also an inspiring cookbook. No, really--I want to run out and find exotic ingredients and make food like cream tacos and pickled squab. These are real people and real food.
