why don't people pick up after their dogs?

I always carry at least 2 plastic grocery bags with me when I walk my dogs, so I can clean up after them. Now, it's not as though these bags are hard to come by, and it really doesn't take much effort to reach down and collect the poo. Not to mention, I don't want to walk my dogs tomorrow and run the risk of stepping in some business that I chose to ignore the day before. The worst part is, people seem to be pretty shameless about it. Is it laziness? Stupidity? Irresponsibility? All of the above? What gives?

Update:

Hey DDaringdave, you're gross! Just remember, next time you step in a mess, that "no one wants to clean it up!" I'm sure you'll be perfectly understanding about it.

All of the above. when I see someone leave their poo, I run to them with a plastic bag and tell them, your dog left something behind..

yes, it embarrasses them, but they deserve it, as they are the reason my dogs are banned from so many areas..

I actually choose my dog walking route considering the availability of trash cans. I walk two huge dogs at a time..I sure don't like to carry it around any longer than I have to..lol

  • Oh Gee? I haven't the faintes idea...(hint hint) I'm going to say... all of the above! I clean my backyard up every other day. I have too...Now, I can understand if you are in a big field where your dog(s) are running and you happen to see them take a squat way out there, then consider it fertilizer for the grass. The cows do it too hello? You don't see farmers or ranchers going to pickup after their livestock? I think about it this way: if you live in the city where a lot people are then it is best to pickup after your dog. You or your dog can get worms from animal poop...I also keep my dogs up to date on the Heartworm Preventitive called Interceptor which protects against all these worms: roundworms (Toxocara canis, Toxascaris leonina), hookworms (Ancylostoma caninum) and whipworms (Trichuris vulpis). I want to keep my dogs safe from those who don't pickup the poop especially at dog parks...Hardly anyone picks it up there...I felt lke I was doging land mines so to speak! Dogs that are in generally good condition may not act threatened by worm infestations and may not even show signs of having worms. However, it's a good idea to keep your dog as worm-free as possible so that if disease or stresses do occur, the dog has greater reserves and defenses to handle the crisis. Check out the different kinds of worms on the site below...

I don't know why, but it drives me insane.

I live in a rather nice neighborhood with lovely landscaping lining the winding paths. The community even went so far as to install 'doggie cleanup' stations on each corner... consisting of nice wooden trash cans and a roll of small plastic bags below a simple sign asking people to clean up after their dogs. Even with the bags and bins provided... even with the high prices people pay to live in this neighborhood... even considering the fact that the furthest they have to walk to dispose of their dog's mess is to the nearest corner.... people STILL let their dogs leave piles of dogcrap all over the place.

In general, I'm an optimistic person... but things like this sometimes make me think there's no hope for the human race. (sigh)

Lazy and ignorant. People don't realise that picking up their dogs dropping is sooo important in the fight to avoiding the spread or parasites and canine infectious diseases.

In Brisbane Queensland Australia it is illegale to walk your dog without having 2 poo bags (or something to pick it up with) and the fine is over $150.00 Aus.

Because they are lazy. I lived in an apartment complex for a while and luckly, if you were caught, you had to pay a fine. First, $25, then $50, then $75 and then you had to get rid of your pet. I am sure people didn't want to risk paying for not picking up a "mess," or being forced to get rid of your pet or move out.

Definitely all of the above, with an emphasis on sheer laziness. I too ALWAYS pick up after my dogs, and I have tracked in dog mess from my neighbors one too many times. It's those owners who make the rest of us look bad.

because most ppl are irresponsible dog owners and dont care . I carry a bag with me when i walk and i own a chihuahua which really does not go that big but i still pick it up and then you have someone that has a big dog and does not pick it up at all .

I would say all of the above! People don't seen to mind if their dogs take a poop right in the middle of the side walk. All they care about is that they didn't do it in their living room floor!

everything you said and more. I yell at people who don't pick up after their dogs, and it is a ticketable offense where I live. If I see the cops near I ask them to give the people a ticket.

    A) all of the above, also moronic selfcenteredness and simply the fact that it is stinky sloppy and well poo.
