Many last names contain "BERT". What does it mean?
Many last names end with "bert". Hebert, Hurlbert, Cutsbert, Haysbert,etc. What does bert mean? I believe it to be French>

the name Bert derives from old German meaning Bright.
Since people were given names based on their occupation or location in the town many years ago, I can assume people who were named Bert probably lived on the east or west side of the town where the sun rose or set and where the light would have been the brightest.
Just a theory though.

Cobra is on the right track: The element -bert is often derived from the Germanic element beraht meaning "bright". That goes for first names as well as for surnames (many of which are derived from first names)
