Ooooh, I'm so honored that I'm the first to answer this!!! Love original Psycho and the Saws, too. It really depends what you're going for, but here's my breakdown:
Best filming/art: Suspiria, The Cell
Best whodunnits: Saws, Screams, Cry_Wolf, Gaslight
Best tension: Repulsion, The Haunting (original for cryin' out loud!), The Descent, Event Horizon, the Exorcist
Scared the bloody hell out of me still have nightmares: The Ring (Am.), Reincarnation (one of the 8 films to die for: hard to find).
Hope this helps!

The Exorcist is a movie that will scare me every time I see that crazy girl's face. But my favorite is Kubrick's The Shining. BEST EVER!
Runners Up:
Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight
Tales from the Hood(i'm serious)
and the Twilight Zone Movie(not that scary but good)

I have to be honest in saying that all these "old and original" movies don't and have never scared me. The only two movies that I can say gave me nightmares for like, weeks were The blaire witch project and The Ring.

The Exorcist ... I shouldn't need to go any further than that if you want a scary movie

I've never seen a film since that has frightened me as much as the original Exorcist did.

I think that the trailer for the Grudge 2 was the scariest preview I've seen, but I haven't seen the movie.
Exorcist, Shining, and Poltergeist are standbys
