By GPL Software you mean FREE. By proprietary, you mean PAID and available commercially.
In general, free is pretty good. But if I have problems with it, or it does not meet my needs, I look for more at http://www.download.com/
When I want something that works, I'll buy it. For instance, I own Adobe Acrobat, Paint Shop Pro, Microsoft Office, QuickBooks. Cool Edit Pro and a number of other commercially available software packages.
So it depends.

What do you prefer a hammer or a knife? Each has their place. Use the right tool for the job.
