The "Warped Tour"--can anyone give me the scoop on it?
My kid (age 16) is in a band that was invited to try out for it locally. The band hasn't been around too long, so I was doubtful about why they'd be asked, though they're pretty good. They decided not to enter as they didn't feel they had enough songs. SO...is it a scam (the invitation) or the real thing? Is it appropriate for teens? I'm sure he'll ask again next year.
Thanks for the input! I'm bummed now, that they chose not to go (we had said yes). They're pretty original...my kid writes most of the lyrics + songs. He likes NOFX, the Matches and Fallout Boy among others. He's also influenced by older punk like The Sex Pistols, The Ramones & the Clash. To hear his band ("White Boy Can't Jump"), go to their page on Myspace.
I checked out the first (official link); what a production! Looks like they're already gearing up for this summer. I don't know what the local arenas are this yr. but last yr. there were at least 5 near us.

dont be so sure about next year, they fill up quick,
when i was there that had 50+ bands,
some 'stages' were just the instruments, amps and a banner, some bands played for 15 minutes, others an hour,
id say he missed out on a great chance to get some exposure.
its about the fans, thousands of people walking around, right up to the band,if they have tapes/cd's for sale cheap and people like what they hear its on.
the punk 'community' is different than any other.
we dont want to hear another blink182 or greenday,we want something new and original at the same time.
one of the best shows ive ever seen.its no less appropriate than ozzfest.
MAKE HIM PLAY NEXT YEAR...if he is serious about the band.

The Warped Tour usually has a stage that local bands play on, for whatever city you are in. Ernie Ball (guitar company) usually sponsers it. Go to http://www.warpedtour.com/ for the info on making it to the Warped Tour. Also, try http://hottopickevinsaysstage.com/ for an application for your sons band to play. The Warped Tour is very appropriate for a teenager, I have been going since I was 16, and I'm 25 now. They have non profit organizations there to go along with the music, so while you rock out to some punk music, you can save the earth or register to vote while youre at it. The Warped Tour is the best music community out there, check it out.

even if he doesn't play there he should still go and check it out. it's soooo awesome! guaranteed to be a good time and if he goes once he will want to go every year.yes, it's that good. where else can you see that many bands in one day?last year tickets were $30. and i am going for sure this year. i can't wait! there are a lot of teens that go.there are stages galore and band booths. some of the bands come out and give autographs after they play. my advice is to see who's playing the day you're going and when you get there go to the sign that show the line-up and what times they play and plan your day by that.then you get to see who you want, because you'll know what time they will be playing. also, it gets hot, and you can bring water with if you want.stuff there is kinda expensive. we took a backpack with a bunch of water bottles with.there are a lot of booths to check out too. it's like a carnival without the rides and cool booths instead of games. it's awesome. go with if you can it's a good time!
