  • Cleaning fluids on clothes and cloths - which shouldn't go in washing machine?

My husband works for a commercial cleaning company that uses some pretty smelly and caustic stuff to clean. He washed some cloth rags with chemicals on them in our washer (his employer's really cheap!).

I was concerned about it screwing up our washer or leaving residue that would get on our clothes, not to mention into the water supply eventually.

Which ones should be avoided, if they're not "green" (or even if they are)?

  • Breaking Bad - why do (some?) people like it so much?

I never really gave it a chance because it was too weird for me. Bryan Cranston is a great actor (ever see him in the "X-files" ep. "Drive"?). But the premise and sets--the whole look of it just depressed me. So now I know all these people who love it--can anyone tell me why YOU love it? Be specific if you can.

  • BRITISH PEOPLE: should I move to the UK?

I know those 2 terms aren't "interchangeable" but give me a break; I'm a Yank. What do I know? I was in London once yrs. ago and I love British culture, language, tradition and all (esp. your love of PRIVACY, unlike Americans with their snoopiness!)...I want to move there. I'm very polite, laid back, open to new ideas and respectful, as long as you don't ask me to join things. WOULD I FIT IN? (And NO Tarts and Vicars nonsense!). Oh, I'm a writer and I know 3 Brits. I also know it's bloody expensive there! Well, America's no bargain anymore. Should I move there? Give me some guidelines (please)...

  • Thoughts on latest Blink-182 CD?

My son put it on my computer and I have mixed review, as he predicted. I love this band, but not as much as AVA. Just want feedback, and musical analysis if you have it.

  • Lord's Cricket Grounds ---what's the thing?

In John Galsworthy's "The Forsyte Saga", he has a huge scene in 1920, at Lord's Cricket grounds (I'm probably writing it wrong), and it's over prep school ("high school"?) matches. Guys wear hats and ribbons to match their schools and it's a big feast during the break. Does this still happen today? Is it only for the upper classes or rich?

  • WHAT is Manchester United and why is it referred to so often?

OK--I know it's a football thing, and it's important to Britons (or is it just the English?), but WHY did they feature it in that film ("The Day After Tomorrow"), when Bilbo Baggins, I mean, Ian Holm, is at some weather outpost in Scotland and they've used the last of the petrol and are making toasts w/12-year-old scotch, someone says, "'Ere's to Manchester Bloody United!"? And while I'm about it, what's with Russell Brand saying (in "Booky Wook 2") that it's basically the Holy Graaaiill (compared to West Ham, I suppose--you don't have to explain that--he does in his book)?

I need answers if I'm to survive in England when I move there. I've never gotten over my utter befuddlement whilst listening to guys in Barbados discuss cricket and having NO CLUE (tho' I do like its cousin, baseball) what they were saying!

  • What is your favorite 80's group? Please make it New Wave!?

A little techno is required, more than sappiness (as in NO BILLY JOEL!). He's not New Wave anyway. IF you're younger, could you please write WHY you chose this group?

  • Rotten Tomatoes -- what's your experience there, if any?

I love movies and it seems like a decent site solely dedicated to film. But after not going there for awhile, I went back and it seems like many people can't just comment on or disagree about movies any more without trashing others. Is this worth it or is there a better forum (other than IMDb)?

  • Firefox history - how is it deleted?

I've got my Firefox browser set to save browsing history for 90 days, being the main IT person for the house, so I can see if anyone goes to sites known for spam, phishing, viruses, etc. (they're either too lazy or ignorant. Yet one of them keeps coming up with only "today's" history, despite repeated denials that they deleted it!

Is there any other way it could be deleted unless by them or am I being lied to? This is really agitating! I don't want to think my family would lie...but if they are, I don't want them to infect my computer with something nasty, whether by stupidity or laziness!

AND...what other measures can I take (short of booting them OFF the computer, which may happen) to keep their History visible?

  • Manic Depressive? How can you tell?

I've been almost positive, for years, that my husband (48 y.o) is bipolar. No matter what I say, he insists he is NOT, tho' he has a HUGE history of various mental illnesses (including schizophrenia) in his family.

He alternates wildly between depressive behavior (tho' he's on an Zoloft), such as staying in bed all day, not doing things he knows he should, avoiding his family, etc., vs. suddenly becoming VERY animated, talking really fast AND LOUD, not making much sense, and having spasmodic body movements like tapping his feet and slapping his hands on furniture.

Does this guy sound bipolar and if so, how can I convince him to get help?

  • Anyone have a story about bone spurs, arthritis and/or hip replacement to share?

I've had osteoarthritis for some time now, but just found out that I have bone spurs on my left hip joint! I went online to research it and found that the usual treatment is TRH (Total Hip Replacement)! I'm sweating bullets...I'm still middle-aged and NOT ready for walkers, canes, personal care attendants, much less what one guy described on his website as "violent surgery"!!! I still don't have all the info, but would like to get some personal feedback, to add to the doctors' "sweet-talk", ya know?

  • What's the best free monitoring system/keylogger?

I'm concerned about activity on our home computer, but don't want to pay just to find out nothing. Can anyone recommend a monitoring program, or even just a keylogger that won't trigger alarms (I have Avast) and will run silently? I don't need it for very long...maybe a few weeks.

  • David Bowie fans...?

Someone asked me if Ziggy Stardust is supposed by be Bowie himself. I was never into that "era" of his music. Anybody know, and if so, can you explain? Also, is "Boogie" in the song "Slip Away", a real guy?

  • Are today's young people less concerned with privacy?

You see young people (teens, 20-somethings) sharing the most INTIMATE details about their lives on places like MySpace, etc., which would have appalled my generation (and, even those of us who weren't Hippies, were NOT shy or prudish about expressing ourselves). But we had a sense of privacy, like not asking what religion you were, how much money you made, or details about your sex life or personal stuff. Cripes, we didn't tell our own families most things, so why tell people we barely knew?

So...A) ARE kids more eager to share intimate details with total strangers? And B) WHY?! I admit, I don't get it! Is it like Andy Warhol's prediction that everyone would be "famous for 15 minutes" or what?

  • Opinions on Verizon Online Security?

It SEEMS okay, but really slows down the computer, even for updates, and NEVER finds anything! I'm sure we must have at least 1-2 worms or something, as the computer is very slow. Also, the spyware scanner NEVER picks up anything, whereas the AdAware scan always does! Only the firewall seems pretty good.

What do people think of this antivirus suite? When I get more money, I'd like to ditch it and get something better. PC World recommends AOL's Active Virus Shield. Anyone use it?

  • The "Warped Tour"--can anyone give me the scoop on it?

My kid (age 16) is in a band that was invited to try out for it locally. The band hasn't been around too long, so I was doubtful about why they'd be asked, though they're pretty good. They decided not to enter as they didn't feel they had enough songs. SO...is it a scam (the invitation) or the real thing? Is it appropriate for teens? I'm sure he'll ask again next year.

  • Has anyone been harassed by another person just because you don't agree w/them?

I got an email from someone who obviously has a vested interest in a certain cause. Just because I disagreed, (didn't insult, just disagreed), she REPORTED me, then e-mailed me to say she'd done it! That seems pretty childish to me, not to mention nasty. I disagree w/people all the time, but don't report them, unless, say, they're insulting me, openly advocating violence or discrimination, etc.

If this has happened to you, I'd appreciate some CONSTRUCTIVE suggestions on what you have done that's been most effective. I don't expect the mods to solve this problem (not YET anyway!). What happened to Free Speech???

  • How many of you parents have discussed sex and drugs with your children?

When I used to teach high school health, I'd ask my classes how many of them had parents who actually talked to them about drugs, sex, relationships, etc. The response was dismal; maybe 3 out of 25-30 kids! This is truly significant. You have a bunch of religious parents saying the school should say nothing, but they don't either! Then where do the kids learn about sex? On the streets! About drugs? At parties. Is that how we want our kids learning this stuff? I don't THINK so! Who'd support more funding for school programs on this OR teach it themselves (I mean REALLY teach it!)?

  • Quick, but nutritious recipes for my picky, skinny 16 year-old boy?

My son is now 6'4" and only 145 lbs.! He used to be quite picky about EVERYTHING, but now says that he will eat more if it's "home-cooked"! He likes spaghetti and chicken-rice casserole. Still, I must admit I HATE cooking! I was forced to cook for my family of 7 starting at age 13 and it burnt me out.

But I want my son to gain weight and eat right. Does anyone have some EASY, quick(er), but nutritious meals (favoring carbos and meat, as my kid still hates veggies) that I can try on him? He looks like Ichabod Crane!

  • Why did the question about circumcision get deleted?

Someone posted a question as to whether women were mostly in favor of circumcision of infants. This was a valid question! There were a variety of answers, and yes, the word "penis" was used! EGAD! Could this be why it was taken away? I just don't get it. People here ask all kinds of medical advice, some of it pretty graphic...so why delete THAT?

Anyone else have a similar experience?
