BRITISH PEOPLE: should I move to the UK?
I know those 2 terms aren't "interchangeable" but give me a break; I'm a Yank. What do I know? I was in London once yrs. ago and I love British culture, language, tradition and all (esp. your love of PRIVACY, unlike Americans with their snoopiness!)...I want to move there. I'm very polite, laid back, open to new ideas and respectful, as long as you don't ask me to join things. WOULD I FIT IN? (And NO Tarts and Vicars nonsense!). Oh, I'm a writer and I know 3 Brits. I also know it's bloody expensive there! Well, America's no bargain anymore. Should I move there? Give me some guidelines (please)...
Uh, I'm not wanting to move there because I think Brits hate me! If YOU Think that, then DON'T GO THERE! Crikey.
Luddite (Luddite???!) - I forgot to say that I want to retire there. My writing supports me and can be done and sent anywhere, as most writers will tell you.l

You cannot get a visa to retire to the UK. That route was abolished in November 2008. The writers, composers and artists route was closed at the same time.
You must now be actually working and in all but a very few exceptional cases, you will need a sponsoring employer. The UK is only really interested in economically active migrants with high wealth or highly skilled and experienced occupations.
If you are a world renowned writer and can get the endorsement of the Royal Society, the Arts Council, the British Academy or the Royal Academy of Engineering, you could apply under the exceptional talent route. There are 1,000 visas only available under this route.

It's a great place to start a business. (see how to set up and run your own business). The UK is very proud of being "a nation of shopkeepers" and private enterprise is actively encouraged. The excellent flagship unregulatedness of British private enterprise is so good that any individual can just declare themselves to be a company and instantly become a real company and can trade without hindrance in almost any line of business (although there are a few exceptions).

WE do NOT hate you. However immigration IS strict. We can not just up sticks and settle in your country on a whim. By the way.... how are British and UK NOT interchangeable ? British is the shared adjective pertaining to our UK. Just do not say England/English unless such IS the correct term. That is what we non English British people do HATE!!!!!!
