WHAT is Manchester United and why is it referred to so often?

OK--I know it's a football thing, and it's important to Britons (or is it just the English?), but WHY did they feature it in that film ("The Day After Tomorrow"), when Bilbo Baggins, I mean, Ian Holm, is at some weather outpost in Scotland and they've used the last of the petrol and are making toasts w/12-year-old scotch, someone says, "'Ere's to Manchester Bloody United!"? And while I'm about it, what's with Russell Brand saying (in "Booky Wook 2") that it's basically the Holy Graaaiill (compared to West Ham, I suppose--you don't have to explain that--he does in his book)?

I need answers if I'm to survive in England when I move there. I've never gotten over my utter befuddlement whilst listening to guys in Barbados discuss cricket and having NO CLUE (tho' I do like its cousin, baseball) what they were saying!

Update:

They're famous and you hate them? SO...it's like my attitude toward NASCAR then?

Update 2:

And what part of England is Manchester considered to be? (Midlands?)

It's a football club...it's in Manchester which is in North West England not the Midlands.

    Arsenal since I was a baby :)

They are one of the most supported team in world however -_- but I still don't like them haha. But a lot of their fans are usually obnoxious as well....and lot of bandwagon fans.

Football is the national sport remember so the majority of people have a football team usually Chelsea, Arsenal or Manchester United as they are the biggest 3 teams and but of course you do have people supporting other teams my cousin is loyal to West Ham and my granddad loves Tottenham and the rest of my family are all Manchester United fans except me, my mum, 1 aunt and my sisters! So football talk can get heated lol.
