    Actually, there was a precursor to the modern wheeled can opener. It was a nasty knife-shaped thing you dug into the lid, and then levered the top off a bit at at time, usually ripping your other hand on the jagged bits in the process. A great many of the best swear words in the English (and many European) language were invented during this process. It was probably the event which generated the Red Cross Blood Bank, if the truth be known.
