Car wouldn't start. 10 points to person who diagnoses the solution correctly.?
I have a 2003 Saturn Vue, 74,000 miles, 2 year old battery, original altenator, and original starter. Went to start up the SUV, and it would not start. There was a ticking noise and all accessories worked.
The SUV is a 5 spd so I rolled it down a hill to get it started by popping the clutch. Took to Autozone. They tested the electrical system: Battery was dead but passed, altenator tested ok and appeared not to be producing enough amperage to charge the battery, starter worked fine. Ran car for 2 hours, had system tested again, same results.
What was wrong and what eventually needed to be replaced?
Well some of you came close. When I removed the battery to have it charged on the bench, both of the side terminals on the battery started pouring out battery acid. Something internally on the battery failed. Water/acid was everywhere but where it needed to be.
So the battery was bad and therefore would not accept a charge real charge, but usually had enough current to start.
After the battery was replaced, the altenator tested fine.
Since none of the answers were exactly right, I'm going to put it to a vote and let the voters decide.

if the battery was dead, how could it pass? and obviously if the alternator was not charging the battery it is only a matter of time till the battery dies again. need to replace battery and alternator.

It sounds like the alternator. The alternator charges your battery. When you run your vehicle the alternator charges and replaces the juice in your battery needed to run the car. If you ran your car for 2 hours and the alternator is not recharging it during that time your battery will be pretty much dead by the end of two hours.
You probably had enough power in the car to power your accessories at least for a little while, but not enough to start your car. If you don't have enough power to start your car, your car will often make a ticking noise and not even attempt to turn over.
You might also want to have the solenoid checked. Sometimes the problem with a car starting can be as simple as a bad solenoid which is pretty cheap to replace.
You may also want to check your wiring to make sure that charge is going back to the battery. Clean the terminals off with something like a Coke then use a battery terminal gel/grease on the terminals to make sure they don't get corroded again. Check also for frayed or loose wiring.
You can try recharging the battery with a battery charger or by giving it a jump via jumper cables. If using jumper cables, let it charge for at least 5-10 minutes or better. If you use a battery charger and the battery has been run really low the charger may state that the battery is no good. Let it sit on the charger for a bit, once the battery gets enough juice in it then it should test good and it should start charging properly. Once you have the battery fully charged it should turn right over if the battery and starter are good. A battery shouldn't go bad till it is at least about 3-5 years old or so and yours is only 2.
One last thing... I'd recommend not getting a rebuilt alternator if you get an alternator. Rebuilt ones are cheaper but they typically have dead spots and don't last nearly as long as a new one. You might end up going through 2-3 rebuilt ones in the time you go through one new one. A new one costs more, but it is worth the extra money.

Have the battery and alternator testing IN your car. You can get false readings on the bench testing. It might tell you it is ok, when it really isn't, or other way around.
Don't chase it around it circles, a starting and charging system test will figure it out and cost around 50 dollars. Cheaper than buying a new battery and alternator when it could be anything inbetween.
A 2 year old battery should hold a charge, so it's probably not getting the charge, but doesn't mean it is your alternator. A good inspection will save you money and prevent the problem from happening again...when you aren't parked on a hill.

Autozone contradicted themselves. If the alternator appeared not to be producing enough amps to charge the battery, than it is not ok. A bad alternator would be your answer to the dead battery. Try taking the alternator off and taking it to a NAPA Auto Parts store. They have a machine that can run tests on the alternator to thoroughly test it. That is most likely your problem. I would suggest cleaning the battery terminals and checking your battery cables as well. A bad connection can give you numerous problems.

You have a bad diode in your alternator. This is causing a voltage draw when the car is not running. The clicking noise you hear when you try and start is the solenoid switch engaging to send power to the starter. However most starters will not turn over with less then 12.2 volts. Replace your alternator and you will be fine. If you have a volt meter, you can measure the voltage draw between the negative battery cable and the battery post. If the draw if more then 1 volt, you have a bad diode. good luck!

When your alternator is bad, the engine will use the power left in the battery to drive the ignition system and accessories you are using until it is dead. This means your regulator if external may be ok.....your battery may also be ok...but your alternator will need replacing.
You may also check the fuse block for blown fuses...my honda has one for the alt.....
If your alternator tests ok then you may check the surpentine belt and the tensioner.....as a slipping belt/ weak tensioner will also cause this.

Go with a new or rebuilt alternator, it should be putting out about 13.8 to 14.3 volts to keep the battery charged correctly, anything less and your car will not start or if it does not start you could have trouble with all the accesories not working correctly. Good luck

You have a defective alternator, one of the three diode packs has failed and even though it is putting out the amperage it is not enough to replace what the cars operation requires. It also sounds like it has an internal drain in the alternator that is pulling power while the car is shut off.

Solenoid to charge the battery is not connected correctly. Only thing I can think of if alternator's ok.
