I have used TurboTax Freedom Edition for a few years now.
You are right, the word needs to get out.
If you make under the limit (which is somewhere up to about 30k), you get to use the same software that TurboTax sells in the store for $20.
Some may consider it a drawback that it is all done on-line.
I prefer it that way, because everything is archived from year to year and easy to access.
I can still save a copy in PDF form and print out as many copies of my taxes as I need.

Yeah, I just filed my federal tax return for free (and filing my state taxes cost about 9.95) In total I paid about $17.00 (I wanted a hard copy print out sent to me and that cost extra). They have the various links on irs.gov website. It was definitely worth it. I'm a college grad (and about to become a single parent), I have a good job (but I'm a probation officer, so the pay is for ****), and jesus christ am I poor! It was definitely a big help to pay less than $20.00 bucks to file this year. Last year I spent almost $55.00 to file using TurboTax. It doesn't seem like a lot, but when you have one small income and a baby on the way...every dollar counts.

Thanks for the link. The article doesn't mention VITA and AARP sites, though. There trained volunteers (some of whom are CPAs) prepare and file taxpayers' returns for free. To qualify to use VITA an individual or household would need to make less than $39,0000 and for AARP one would only need to be 60 or older. There are thousands of locations throughout the country.
