Jesus and Mary Magdalene?
If Jesus and Mary Magdalene were lovers or husband and wife, how would that impact the faith based tenets of Christianity?

The idea they were lovers comes from one or two of the Gnostic Gospels which were discovered at Nag Hammurabi in Egypt in about 1950 in jars. They were written some 400-500 years after Christ, and were designed as 'secret knowledge' (or Gnosis) to be sold by the forgers to rich Egyptians who had a taste for the sensational, mystery religions etc. The more they paid, the more of this fake secret "knowledge" would be revealed to them, bit by bit. It was good business, like James Cameron's and his friends'. There is no evidence for what these fake Gospels maintain in the centuries that precede their creation. It just goes to show that inventing lies for money is a long-established trade.
By the way, the Gnostics have spiritual descendants in various secret societies in the West. These people have an interest in pushing Gnostic interpretations, as it increases their own power.
Source(s): Elaine Pagels' The Gnostic Gospels is a study of these scrolls. Unfortunately she takes them far more seriously than other serious scholars before or since. But then, when you are specialised in a field, you tend to exaggerate its importance. - Anonymous5 years ago
The DaVinci Code is a novel so we shouldn't take it as scripture. That said, it seems that if Christ was on earth to live as a man that it would make sense for him to be married. Also at that time only rabbis from a certain sect remained celibate and Jesus wasn't part of that group. The first person that he spoke to after rising from the tomb was Mary. That would seem reasonable too if she was closer to him than the others. Some say that Jesus could not have been married because he was sinless. Since when is marriage a sin? We need to remember that the Bible was prepared by a council created by the Emperor Constantine. Books were left out, probably because the political mood of the day didn't appreciate the messages that they contained. This is also where the lies about Mary were created. She was discredited because having a woman in such an esteemed position went against the grain for the male dominated priesthood of the Catholic church. Also, the four gospels in the Bible were not written by men who knew Jesus. They were written over 100 years later so no one alive at His time would have been reviewing them for accuracy.

When you read through the Bible, one of the "worst" things that can happen to a family is the death of a father. Since the culture in which Jesus lived barred women from owning property and holding jobs, widows and orphans were often in financial trouble. Beside the emotions involved in losing a husband or father.
For Jesus, knowing that he came with the express purpose of dying, to have taken a wife, and fathered a young child (or most feel left her pregnant at the time of his death) would be emotionally and financially harmful to them. That would make it very go of character for Jesus to have done.
If you actually reads what is recorded about Mary Magalene in the New Testament, we are told two things about her. She is listed as one of several women who contributed to the ministry of Jesus finanically. (See Luke 5) Also she one of five women who went to the tomb after the sabbath to finish the burial preparations for the boday of Jesus. She was the only one who remained at the tomb when it was found empty, so she became the first to see Jesus.
Beyond that, the New Testament makes no mention of any special relationship between the two. She is never shown to have traveled with Jesus and his disciples. There is no mention of any meetings, dinners, feast, etc., unlike some of the other women in Jesus' life. And she is not mentioned as having an kind of ministry in the early church.
So using nothing but the New Testament documents, there is no reason to suspect that any special relationship existed between the two people.

Jesus couldn't have sex, cause sex is carnal? Absolute hogwash. God had sex with Mary. Produced a child. Now, I am not sure what kind of sex they had, God's spirit "came" over her....what ever that is. But, Mary had baby Jesus. So, in that case, why couldn't Jesus get married and have kids? Like Father, like Son? And, remember, Jesus attended a wedding...his own? His mother told him, "Son, we've run out of wine! Jesus answered her, Woman, don't bother me with the details!" Just like a guy! Never wants to be bothered with marriage details, anyway. But, he did something about it. Turned some water into wine, that was in some vats. Even better than the wine that had been served previously. Why was this wedding important to talk about? Why was this miracle more important than others to stand out and discuss? If having babies is a sin, why did GOD and Mary have one? (Jesus) Today, we call babies, little MIRACLES. They may be born in sin, but not sinful. Remember, if they die, they go to heaven, because they are without sin. It would have been just fine, if Jesus and Mary Magdalene had been married. It would have been proper and beautiful. If they had progeny, they would have been following in God's footsteps.

As an atheist and skeptic I have a dim view of the reports of the finding of Jesus tomb. The fact is Joshua (the name we get our Anglicized Jesus from) and Mary, Judah, Joseph, Matthew, and many others were as common back then as John, Mary, Tom, Bob and others are today. If you know two people named Robert, do you get them mixed up. I know at least 5 that I talk to on a regular basis. All this TV bull is just a way to make money for the film makers. There is no proof of anything.

If Mary Magdalene and Jesus were married or if they were lovers this would mean that Jesus was like every other man, and he was not divine.

The Apostle Paul wrote in the scriptures do not go beyond the things that are written. It's not in the Bible so I don't believe it. If Jesus would have gotten married I'm positive that Jehovah God would have told us so in the scriptures. 2 Tim 3:16-17 All Scripture is inspired by Jehovah God.

Those of The True Christian Faith know The Truth... and what you cite will never be "proven" because it did not happen.... but the enemies of Christianity are hard at work trying to fabricate such "proof"... The forces of evil dominate this world and it will continue untill God decides it is time to end it all..... Faith not based on fact is fantacy... those of The Faith know God... personaly... and God is The Fact... all else can be fabricated... and the forces of evil are very good at fabrication of "facts"... ie: the so-called"documentery" about the so-called tomb of Jesus. and the so-called "devinci code" garbage.

You know I was just reading about this couple on the internet right before typing this. Personally I wouldn't understand why it would matter if Jesus had himself a family. Would this have changed what he preached? No. It would still be the same.
Maybe the Christians would've felt tricked into believing he was a loner all his life.

It would be devastating. If Jesus and Mary were indeed husband and wife (or better yet, they had offspring) then the bible (the basis of christianity) is an out right lie.
