Any good Basset Hound tips?
I just got 2 basset hound puppies, and i've had several other kinds of dogs, but this is my first time to get bassets, so if anyone has any good tips about them i'd really appreciate it!
~*thanks*~

#1 drool happens. It's part of being a bassett.
#2 Use a leash when not fenced in. Bassetts are scent hounds and once on a scent they will follow it, even if it means crossing a highway.
#3 a rolled leather collar helps if they have sore skin a regular collar.
#4. Bowls that are slightly narrower at the top will help keep ears out of the food.
#5.Get them spayed or neutered as soon as they're old enough.
#6. Be prepared to laugh. Alot.
#7. No one howls like a bassett. Enjoy the music.
#8 They love to chew. Keep precious objects up and away. Provide plenty of "legal" chewies
#9. DO be swayed by those sad eyes and provide lots of love
#10 Again, get them spayed or neutered. It's better for their health and controls the unwanted pet popultaion

As a groomer, I've seen some nasty things on Basset Hounds. Clean those ears, every week is good and believe it or not give them a sniff every once in awhile. If anything smells odd get them to the vets. They are prone to ear infections if not cared for properly
And have their nails trimmed regularly, about every four to six weeks. Bassets can get really long nails and if they are not tended to their toes seem to lay at a distorted angle. I can only imagine that it is as painful as it looks.
Brush them vigorously every day. It only takes about five minutes and their coats will shine like you just oiled them.
Have fun, they are one of my favorite breed.

Basset Hound puppies are the best, floppy eared little darlings, each and every one of them. But, teach them tricks now, at an early age, and don't let them forget.
Basset Hounds grow up and then sort of turn into doorstops. They would rather watch a game of fetch than play it and would be very happy, thank you very much, to go for a stroll rather than a brisk walk. With their short legs all walks are brisk anyway.
Have fun with your puppies!
