I'm looking for a respected manufacturer of rat cages?
i know that if you keep a rat in a cage with meshing or barred flooring they can get bumble feet. i was looking at a top cage maker that sells only wire mesh or galvanized cages with wire for flooring. is there any companies that sell large cages with solid flooring?

Most cages actualy have a removeable grill. If not, any will do if you throw down a piece of carboard or something. I mean, unless you're looking for something attractive, a cheap bird-cage would be good. Even better if you put in a shelf for extra floor-space.

We bought this cage for our gliders, but with a little modification it would be awesome for rats. The grill comes out, but there's a gap at the bottom. Like I said, just put down cardboard or something, a piece of plastic could work, too. The only thing wrong with the cage I got is that the measurement was off and it doesn't sit so well on the base, but the darn thing is huge.
Also, bumblefoot usually only happens when the animal is forced to walk on wire all the time with no releif. Provide the releif, prevent the bumblefoot.

I breed rats, and these people are the BEST!!!!!
mesh floors are fine as long as they are the right SIZE mesh. you want to make sure the cage is specifically for rats, not rabbits, or mice, or hamsters, or ferrets... Rats!
They also should have at least one solid floor too though. usually being the bottom. Rats love to climb, so 2-3 floors is ideal. vertical bars for the "outter" are also best as rats like to climb (especially dwarf rats) and that gives them a nice stretch to exercise on.

Martin's Cages are fantastic...well built and reasonably priced. And since you can order them online you don't have to rely on the often pitiful stock at the local pet store.

I have used these for years. The bottoms are solid plastic and deep enough to keep shavings in. The cages are powdercoated and the grids are small enough to keep even babies in.
Be aware that you do have to assemble them, but it's fairly easy. If I could do it, I'm sure anyone could!!

A glass aquarium tank might be a better idea. They are easier to clean, more sanitary, and a little warmer.
