humane way to put my dog down at home?

My 120 lb. dag was hit by a car and is suffering. There is no way I can load him into the car with my three kids because he is so large and is in so much pain. My hubby will not be home until tommorrow morning and I don't want the dog to suffer. He is 12 years old and broke the lock on our yard and was hit hard by a car in the chest. He can't get up now and is breathing very hard. He will not tolerate bring touched or moved. I can't find a vet to come to my house. I can't shoot a gun or I'd dispatch him so he wouldn't suffer. Please only serious suggestions that are humane and no guilt. With 3 children, I'm already there.

Thanks

Update:

Thanks for the input. I live in a very rural area and animal control is a 9-5 job. There is only a sheriff out here and we would be low priority.

I appreciate your suggestions however and will check often. Thanks for not being judgemental.

Did you try animal control in your city? They may be able to send someone out to help or if not call the local police, they may be willing to come out and shoot the dog. If they cannot help, I'd call every vet in the phone book and tell them what happened, maybe one of them will be willing to come out and help.

There really is nothing humane you can do at home.

    I am so very sorry.

I know you said you cant get a vet to come to your house, maybe call around a bit more they will charge you more but there is always a vet on call even after hours, some do make house calls if the situtation is severe, also ask a neighbor to help, call spca they deal with those kinds of things or at least they could point you in the right direction, or even the police if a fire men can get a cat out of a tree iam sure they can do something or recomend something at least, there has to be a way, there is nothing you can do that is( humane ) in the mean time give him a couple of asprin for the pain, it wont hurt him my vet suggested it once, what city are you in?good luck

The vet won't come? If you had help getting him to a vet hospital is there one near you that is open? Can any neighbors help you drive him to a vet clinic?

Is there a humane society within a couple of hours from you? A rescue group? Try calling them. If they have an emergency number they may be able to send someone to help you carry the dog to the vet. They may also know a vet who could come to you.

www.petfinder.com will give you a list of groups in your area, but the phone book may yield results as well. Many of the groups on petfinder have a regional number and you have to leave a message.

How rural? Are there any FARMS with big animals nearby? Call every local farm with large animals and find out who their vets are. Many times vets who do large animal practice do NOT do small animals so you may not have heard of the vet----but vets who tend cows, sheep and horses DO travel to the farms so they might be able to travel to you.

    Call and beg for help.

Another option is to call a vet and find out how much over the counter meds you could give to get the dog through the night until your husband can get home.

I think your best bet is to find a large animal vet since they travel.

Best wishes and my thoughts and prayers are with you and your kids.

Is there a neighbor that can help you lift the dog? If not, call the police.

The first animal hospital I ever worked at was an emergency facility, and a woman once had the police help her take her dog in. I'm sure they would be willing to help.

When the police come to lift him into the car, just gently tie some gauze or a leash or a rope around his muzzle so that he can't bite, and then take it off right after he's in the car so that he can breathe okay.

Call an animal shelter, animal control (whatever it is called in your area) or a vet immediately, (many will come to you for emergencies). There is no humane way I know of to do it yourself, especially not without guilt.

You updated and said that you only had a local sheriff, could you perhaps try state police officers? Sorry, if that sounds extreme, just trying to be helpful.......

Call the police and tell them what's going on and that you need help. They should either be able to get a hold of animal control or come themselves to put the dog out of its misery. If they won't come try calling a neighbor or friend to shoot the dog, but this should be a last choice.

Do you think the dog will survive with vet care? Im sure if you called and pleaded with a vet, they would make a house call. Call animal control and ask them for help. Maybe they would be willing to take him to the vets office to have him put to sleep or get the care he needs to live.

There is nothing that would be humane as you wouldn't be able to do an intraveneous injection and having him swollow something would kill him incredibly slowly.

Is there a local shelter or prevention against cruelity facility that could come out and euthanise?

I would say that within a couple of hours he will die but it will be extremely stressful / scarey and mind blowingly painful.

Re call the vets and stress the pain your pet is in one of them should have the heart to come out and if they don't then report them,

Look in your phone book for a mobile vet. If there is not a mobile small animal vet in your area, try large animal vets. Make sure you tell them that your dog is suffering.
