American Airlines (AAdvantage) Award Fees?
Can American Airlines charge me $50 to use my miles? They have a schedule of fees now that apply to tickets booked using AAdvantage miles. $5 airport tax if booked 21+ days, $50 7-21 days and I think $100 for booking < 7 days. Is that legal? What good is a free ticket if they charge me to book the flight?

Unfortunately, AA is doing this, it seems, to punish people for not booking far in advance. The fees are legal, which is also unfortunate. Does it tick me off, yes. Will I fly AA anymore, not as much as I used to because of stupid crap like this.

AA or any airline can charge you or not for using your miles. It explains it clearly to the passengers within the disclaimers note.
Tickets booked using miles are intended for pleasure travel (vacation) so they are supposed to be booked in advance. That's why they charge when you book with less than 21days in advance.
