Which is the proper (official) abbrev. for Quebec when sending mail: PQ or QC?
Why are there two in the first place?

Oh, my God! If you use "PQ" you risk being tracked down and then killed by being smothered in a vat of poutine gravy by Quebec separatists! "PQ" went out about 25 years ago as politically incorrect with the first Parti Quebecois government, replaced by "QC", although we receive mail from the States or Europe from time to time addressing as "Que."

The proper abbreviation for the province is QC.
"PQ" refers to either the Parti Quebecois (a political party in the provincial - and, for the moment, federal - governments. It also refers to the French naming of the province itself ... la belle Province du Quebec.

Both are acceptable, but the official one according to Canada Post is QC.
PQ used to stand for "Province du Quebec" if you were of French origin, or "Province of Quebec" in the anglo quarter.
Since no one is going around typing PO for Province of Ontario, you would think the old way would have died out by now...

I believe:
Official: QC
What most Canadians use: PQ
I think the 'QC' showed up at the same time 'ON' for 'Ont.' did. Harmonizes with the Americans, as usual. (@#&* new day for daylight savings time...)
