Politeness: The most acceptable hypocrisy?

this quote is from "The Devil's Dictionary" by Ambrose Bierce. It reminded me of the story of Confucious... "baffled by the answers of the older man [Lao Tzu], to whom etiquette meant hypocrisy and nonsense."

Do not confuse etiquette with respect.

When does the rules of etiquette become nonsense but at the root?

    Etiquette, respect, and politeness are good when the motivation is concern about people's feelings and sensibilities|

    They are bad when the motivation is mere flattery and kissing up to get something|

    However, many people find that when they act in a respectful way because they believe in treating people properly, they are mocked and criticized for doing so and they are accused of kissing up|

    These criticisms and this mockery, however, come from people of bad will.

    This is because it is a principle that a person with bad motives is one who attributes bad motives to everyone else|

    No, and wikipedia is not a factual source, it is a compilation of opinions.

    Politeness = being respectful
