How much water to run to clear possible lead in supply pipes?

Old house, roadside terrace; we are told the supply pipe underground is still lead. OH always runs tap for ages in the morning before filling kettle. In these conservation-conscious times, how long to run the tap to be sure of getting fresh water?

if its lead i would replace it,,,many health problems with lead ..most towns try to get out of paying for the replacement,,,but there are federal laws that will help in the replacement and removal,,,your health depends on it

Run the water first thing in the morning, and any time it hasn't been used for 6 hours or more, until it doesn't get any colder. As you are roadside this won't take long, probably less than a minute. This assumes the first water drawn is to be consumed - eg making tea/coffee. If having a shower etc first then obviously there is no need to worry (even if the shower is fed from a tank in the loft, as the tank will refill from the mains as you shower).

That would depend on the amount on lead used and the length of the pipes. I recommend a lead testing kit. They can be found at most water conditioner stores. Also, there are many kits aviable on the internet. Just type water testing, lead into your search engine. If you have children, I recommend bottled water until your tersting is complete. Rick

This depends on the size and length of the pipe.

Get on to your water company straight away, it is not worth endangering your health.

My area has water meters, so how much £££ would you run down the drain.
