A so called 'donkey stone' was used on stone steps to improve the appearance of them, keep them white and clean looking. This was also a practise in the north of England. It was knows as 'donkeying the step'. There was great rivalry among the housewives to see who had the cleanest step!

Hey--------------what you are talking about is a "Donkey" stone, it's not pumice, it whitened the steps and window sills of thousands of terraced houses in Wales and the North West of England, up until the end of WW2, then it gradually went out of fashion.
