I want to be a sportswriter?

Alright, I'm a 14 year old freshman in high school who has deep aspirations to become a sports writer... specifically for a NY tabloid or normal paper. However, I don't know what direction I should be going in order to make that possibility a reality. I'm joining my school paper next year when I am eligible, and I write for a cyber magazine website called sportspagemagazine.com where I write an article once a month or so. I'm also in touch with a baseball writer from the NY Times, Jack Curry. I've showed him my writing and he appears to be impressed, but I know I have to do some things along the way that don't involve writing. Decisions such as college choice, majoring, high school grades, etc. Anyone out there that can give me ideas?

Begin thinking about a college program that is strong in journalism. Perhaps that might mean that you would like to stay in New York, as well - meeting with your contacts at the Times regularly along the way. Sports writing is certainly a lower brow style of writing, but the fundamentals of grammar and structure are still very important. Without sound basics, there is very little room for creative, fun journalism. College will come at you faster than you think, so start planning on your major now.
