I installed Win XP, but Win 2000 stayed on it. How do I remove 2000 and not have a multiboot system?

I have tried finding stuff online, but it is pretty vague. So I am looking for specific, easy instructions to follow so I can have more room on my computer. I have tried reinstalling XP a few times with a clean install and it nevers replaces 2000.

Update:

When I installed XP it asked which partition to install it on. There were only 2 partitions, and only 1 big enough to hold the program. So then I tried to delete the partition to start over and it said that it could not be deleted because XP setup was using some of the files. So I had to install XP on partition C with 2000.

    Check out this web site

    http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.h...

They give a step by step rundown on how to git er dun.

However, I did not see anything talking to the 137gb partition limit, watch out for this issue or your 200gb drive will get a lot smaller.

Be sure to format in NTFS, not FAT or FAT32.

    Good Luck

The reason it does not replace Windows 2000 is because XP, by default, installs in the \windows directory, WinNT installs in the \winnt directory.

To remove it, first you need to take it out of the boot process. To do this, right click on 'My Computer' (either the desktop icon or off your start menu). If you have one of those systems that has neither, then go to your control panel and open 'system'.

On the System properties page, select the 'Advanced' tab.

Click on 'settings' under the Startup and Recovery section.

*Caution - you can cause your system to become unbootable if you make the wrong type of edits here - be very careful about any changes you make.

On the Startup and Recovery page, the top section sets the options for how your system starts. There is a button there marked 'Edit'. Click on it.

This opens the boot.ini which is the file that tells your system how it is going to boot. Find the line that points at the /winnt directory and remove it.

    Save and close this file.

You have just removed Winnt from your boot list, it is no longer accessible from the boot menu. Now close all open windows and return to your desktop.

Open 'My Computer' so you are looking at your drive list.

Double-click on the boot drive, usually the 'C:' drive.

Find the Winnt folder. *Rename* the folder to Winnt.bak

If you get an error about not being able to rename the folder because there are files in use, that means you have some processes that are dependant on files in the Winnt folder. Until you find, and reconfigure, those processes, you cannot get rid of the Winnt directory.

If you were able to successfully rename the folder, then the next step is to reboot your system and see if it comes up cleanly.

If your system does not boot properly, reboot your system in safe mode and rename the winnt.bak folder back to winnt - again, you have some process that is dependant on the winnt directory and you'll need to track that down first.

If it does boot cleanly, then I'd recommend that you run your system for about a week before deleting the winnt.bak folder, just to be sure.

    That should do it.

i went thru the same thing the other day, but i accidentially installed xp twice. you need to do it again, go with new install, advanced setup, when it gets to the partition area you want no partition, the partition separates the 2 leaving 1. without the partition it will get rid of the old and it will all be new! good luck!!

by the way just put the disk in and do it, dont try to delete anything when i tried that it did the same thing to me it wouldn't let me!!
