What is the total sales tax amount for new car bought in VA, shipped and registered in CA?

$70k new car.

Virginia (.002% sales tax rate) = $140.

California (.08% sales tax rate) = $5,600.

The car will be purchased in VA, shipped to CA where it will be registered/licensed.

Do I have to pay both state's sales tax? Or, can I legally avoid the CA sales tax?

Update:

hey jeremy p, why would i WANT to pay nearly $5,600 in sales tax if it was unnecessary. do you think people that can afford $70k cars do so by wasting money :-|

Are you going to register in VA at all or just California?

First off VA Sales tax is 3% = $2100 + aplicable gas guzzlers tax. i think you got the VA state tax confused with an area sale tax (varies on different areas of VA)

The only way to avoid paying the higher 8% tax in Cali is to register and title it in VA first but you would have to prove residency. If not just tell the dealership you are going to register and title in Cali and the can adjust the tax there. You WILL NOT have to pay both states.

But, Just a question! If you are buying a $70,000 car, why can't you afford to pay the California tax? Cry me a river!

I don't think you can register it in ca until it has 6500 miles on it. you better call dmv
