Gifts for people with whom I'll be living but whom I won't know?
What are some good gifts to give a host family in a study abroad program? My student orientation manual thing suggests taking gifts, but i'm not sure what to take. The country I'm going to is Morocco. Thanks.

I've lived in Morocco for a couple of years; here are some things that Moroccans love receiving from other countries:
Men/Boys
-baseball caps (your local team or a famous one)
-hooded sweatshirts (your university?)
-Any sports gear (surprisingly, a baseball went over very well with a 20-sthing friend here - there is no baseball in Morocco!)
-Stuff from your hometown/university
Women/Girls:
-Unique cooking items (I bring ingredients for Toll House cookies - there are no choc. chips or brown sugar in Morocco)
-Scarves (particularly large square ones that can be worn as hijab)
-Chocolate (Morocco has Ferrero Rocher, the major cheap candy brands, and Ritter Sport - they would love Lindt, Toblerone, other quality chocolates)
Gifts that work generally for a family: I agree with the above who said "real maple syrup" (although you'll have to explain it), peanut butter, photos/items from where you live.
