how do we win a war?......?

i am not speaking of any particular war what i am asking is i guess a multiple layer question. 1 when all of the diplomacy and all the political maneuvering and sanctions have failed what do you do?

2 when the only option left is war how do you fight that war, what is your strategy to win? is it a PC war where no civilians die or is a sweep and clear mission hoping that the citizens of the country will force their leaders to surrender.

3 when the war is over do you pull out or rebuild and help the new government form.

this is more of question of strategy than politics. but i will admit i have a political agenda as a motivation for the question.

Update:

wizwbloke i have to comment on one thing you said. you said that big bush did what he said and then got out. that is not entirely true. GHWB promised the people of iraq that america would help them to fight saddam and then when the cease fire agreement was signed we pulled out. and saddam went back to slaughtering the people who had dared to stand up against him. while i think in many ways GWHB did a pretty good job he allowed thousand of iraqi citizens to be tortured and slaughtered. he did not do what he said he would do.

Update 2:

so far the answers a good, i disagree with some of them but at least i am gettin ideas from everyone instead of just political rhetoric. thank you.

    1. How long do you want to win it for? Usually, a military victory lasts only until the other side is stronger than you and stops when all of one side is dead ... unless ...

When the 2 sides understand what the differences are between them, and can accept that the other guys are allowed to *wear or not wear hats inside, unlike you, then you can co-exist and not be enemies.

    2. work out why the heck you are going to war and stop when the objective is met. That is what Pres Bush Snr did and why that Iraq war went for only 6 or 7 weeks. The reasons for staying in Iraq now have nothing to do with the excuse for going in.

    3. To help rebuild, you send in advisers, industrialists, teachers and medics. Soldiers are not suited to civilian areas. Soldiers are great in a battle field facing enemy, but if they came to restore order in your neighborhood, a lot of people would get hurt that got in the way of their targets.

    1) When diplomacy has ended, we fight a war.

    2) War is not PC. Currently, the US is attempting to fight a PC war with no civilian casualties. As such, our enemy is hiding in civilian areas because they see this as their only option for winning. In addition, knowing the history of the US, no opposing force has ever beaten the US in combat... the US has only lost by giving up and going home without winning (a.k.a. Vietnam).

    3) You must stay and help rebuild, as the US did for Japan and Germany after WWII. In both countries, a remnant of the enemy continues to battle the US during the reconstruction in an attempt to keep power. However, most people do not know this part of history.

There are several possible outcomes of war that could be described as a "win", and the US has experienced them.

I'm not making any moral judgments here. I do believe some of the US past actions are regrettable and must not be repeated.

    1. An anounced goal is achieved:

The War of Independence (also called the Revolutionary War) was to separate us from the British Commonwealth and establish US as a sovreign nation. Goaaaaallllll!!!!!!

The War of 1812 has been called a "draw", I think mainly because no territory changed hands. Among the goals: to stop impressment of US sailors into the Royal Navy, and secure the rights of US-flagged merchant ships to travel unmolested. (Additionally, there was the invasion and burning of Washington DC by British soldiers, who were eventually expelled.) Goaaaaalllllll!!!!!!!!

The American Civil War (to give it its common name) was an attempt by some states to do what the 13 colonies had done in the War for Independence. The primary goal of the US (Union) was to prevent that and keep those states within the nation. Goaaaaaaaaallllllllll!!!!!!!!!!!!

    2. Conquest and Expansion

The Indian Wars (to give the era its "official" name) was a series of wars of conquest in which the "enemy" were soundly defeated militarily and as peoples, relegated to reservations and maintained as subjects.

    3. Liberation, Occupation, Restoration

WW2 was several wars in one, but the US/Allied purpose remained the same: to defeat the enemy military, expunge from their society the percieved causes of the enemy aggression, and restore them as nations. To this day, the Japanese constitution formally renounces warfare for the furtherance of national goals (a far cry from the bushido/kamikaze mindset that led to thier initiation of war), and likewise Germany was successfully and (so far) permanently de-Nazified.

    4. Counteracting another country's invasion, without interfering very much in the enemy country afterward.

WW1; Germany invaded her neighbors, was pushed back by allied forces, lost all she had gained and then some, lost the right to have a sizeable military and had to pay reparations, but was permitted to continue to govern her own affairs.

Gulf War I (I went to this one); Iraq invaded her neighbor (and looked ready to invade another), was pushed back by allied forces, ;lost all she had gained, lost the right to fly in some parts of her airspace, lost (at least on paper) the right to develop certain classes of weapons, but was permitted to continue to govern her own affairs.

The only way to win a war is to 'get them before they get you!Sending in ground troops to be killed by the enemy is stupid. Iraq, and most of the middle-east should have just been flattened. These people aren't worth our effort and in the end they will blame you for everything.

The native americans fought to defend their countries from invasion and lost the clear sweep advantage because they fed and clothed the enemy. Big strategic mistake.
