Blu-Ray discs are like DVDs, but they store much much more information, enough to hold an HD movie, which DVD's cannot hold.

You cannot play a Blu-Ray disc in your DVD player - you need a player specifically built to play Blu-Ray. There are several on the market, but they are expensive - about $1000.

There is a competing disc format - HD-DVD - that can also hold an HD movie. Both formats are battling it out for consumer acceptance, just like the VHS vs. Beta video tape format war back in the 80's. HD-DVD also requires a new player, and won't play in your existing DVD player.

Either of these formats - Blu-Ray or HD-DVD - are only important if you own an HDTV, and you really really want the best resolution money can buy. Most people don't want to spend that much money, don't have an HDTV, and are also fine with regular DVD resolution. It remains to be seen whether either format will take off, as consumers may or may not think that the incremental benefit in resolution is worth the extra cost.

Blu Ray is one of the two comerically availabe High Definition dvds out there. Due to a higher storage capacity they are able to deliver high quality video and audio. They are only playable on special players that support them. So no, you can't play them on your dvd player. sorry

A proprietary technology created by Sony meant to replace DVDs. Much like Beta was supposed to do to VHS. Sony also pioneered Beta.

No you cannot play bluray on anything but a PS3 or designated bluray player. They easily go for around a grand.

My suggestion would be to wait and see who wins between bluray and HD-DVD. My money is on HD-DVD.

extreme def tvs are purely extreme def tvs. they might purely handle a extra ideal video sign than a standard DVD participant and the conventional connections they incorporate. same with the sign you acquire out of your television provider. ideally in case you have a HDTV the ideal possible image you may desire to visual reveal unit could be from a blu-ray disc participant attached via a HDMI cord on your HDTV. as far as i understand blu-ray technologies is purely on disc's. some dvd gamers have HDMI connections that's meant to be extra ideal than widespread dvd s-video connections. all of it boils right down to having a HDTV with a HDMI cord connecting to a Blu-ray disc participant. in case you have all of that when which introduce a cable field with HDMI output then you easily are good of the line, the ideal image which you will get with a HDTV.
