How to Help 22 YO Son who Can't/Won't work?

My son is 22 years old. He's only been out on his own since last October and has been living on a workman's comp settlement. The money is almost gone and he still hasn't gone to work. I don't want him to have to move back home. He has a history of depression. He's currently taking med, but I am beginning to believe that he CAN'T work. He doesn't seem to have the drive or motivation to do anything. I'm at wits end because I don't want him to end up on the streets. Anyone here have a similar situation? What can I do? I'm desparate for answers. Thanks to all in advance.

Update:

Just so you know. He has been in therapy his whole life. He now refuses to go. Every test that could possibly be run has been run so many times he has them memorized. I do feel alone and desparate here. Thanks again!

It doesn't sound as if your son's depression is being fully treated. In addition to meds, if his depression is that serious, he should be in therapy, a day treatment program and/or a supported work environment (e.g. part-time job with a "job coach"). You need to ask his doctors about treatment options. He should not be allowed to sit around all day and isolate.

The other possibility is that there is something going on in addition to depression. He should be fully tested by a psychologist, someone that will do some real tests, not just sit with him for 15 minutes and then prescribe some pills. Again, ask around for referrals. If you live in the State of CA, then you can ask for testing through the Regional Center system or try your local Department of Mental Health. It may take awhile.

The other option is to let your son move back home, but with conditions e.g. he MUST be in therapy, a day treatment program, etc.

It sounds like you are alone in all this, and this is too much for one person. You need a treatment "team" and a support group for parents. Look online or in your community. This is really too much for one person to handle.

    Good luck.
